Essays About Social Media

For many, social media is and has always been, a double-edged sword. Since its creation, it has given humans a way to connect that was not available before. No longer do have to sit physically across from someone to feel love, kindness, and connection. No longer do we have to head out on the town or join a club in person to make a new friend or form a new relationship. We can do it all from our phones, computers, and tablets.

Whereas early online connections and friendships were fewer and deeper, the current unlimited access to other people makes it difficult for those virtual connections to reach the level that older online or in-person relationships could aspire to. And a seemingly endless amount of online “relationships” or interactions can take away from the close and intimate relationships in our real lives.

This does not even begin to make a dent on the pros and cons list that is so often enveloped around social media. Therefore, essays and written work about social media are always relevant to the current zeitgeist. We have been writing essays about social media for a couple of decades now and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future – until we master the balance of what is great and what is not so great about the technology.

When writing an essay about social media, it is important that you narrow down your theme, topic, or thesis to something specific or a particular thought. Social media and thoughts about social media can encompass a massive amount of topics and ideas. Pick a particular thought or topic that you think others should know more about and work from there. It would be really difficult to include every thought you have ever had about the bad side of social media in one average-sized essay, so don’t fall into that trap. Creating an outline on a topic as broad as this one would be very helpful when gathering your thoughts. Outside of narrowing down where you want your essay to go, here are a few other things to keep in mind:

– Create a strong introduction and thesis statement. Reinforce how relevant and important this topic is to current life.

– Make the body of your paragraph the heaviest with information and facts. Have one argument or key thought per paragraph.

– In the conclusion, restate your thesis and introductory thoughts. Do not restate with the exact semantics, but in another thoughtful way that adds information that you provided in the bulk of your essay.
