Introduction
Employees are a critical component of every company. They give the company a competitive advantage over its competitors and achieve its goals and objectives. According to Deressa & Zeru (2019), many factors affect an employee’s performance in the company. One factor that stands out is motivation. Motivation is the force that drives employees into action by encouraging them to exert more effort in carrying out their responsibility. It is therefore imperative that the organization understands how to motivate its workforce. In this paper, I seek to discuss how the method (performance appraisal) I will use to increase the motivation of employees at Amazon and explain its importance to the company and its employees.
Performance appraisal as a motivational tool
I will use the performance appraisal technique to motivate Amazon employees because it benefits the employees by increasing their productivity and overall performance. Performance appraisal is a formal management system organizations use to assess and evaluate individual employee performance. It is frequently viewed as a fundamental management tool; this is so because there are various benefits associated with performance appraisal to both the employees and the organization (Idowu, 2017). It is important to note that performance appraisal is an effective management technique that an organization can utilize to influence employees’ energy to achieve their strategic goals.
Importance of motivation
First, motivation helps in improving the performance levels of employees. Consequently, motivated employees tend to achieve organizational goals and grow their careers simultaneously. According to Deressa & Zeru (2019), performance appraisal serves the development purpose of the organization. It will enable me to focus on employees’ development by integrating competency development initiatives and training strategies. The resultant effect is that I will enhance the employee’s current and future performance, contributing to their career growth and achieving the organizational strategic goals.
Secondly, motivation is essential since it helps in reducing employee turnover. It is important to note that stimulation creates confidence in employees to get their needs satisfied at the organization itself (Deressa & Zeru, 2019). Performance appraisal will enable me to identify the skill sets that an employee requires to perform to their actual level and help out by offering more training. As a result, the employee will perform better and grow professionally. In addition to that, employee retention is beneficial to the organization since it reduces the expenses of hiring and training new employees and positively impacts the employees’ morale and the company’s image.
Thirdly, motivation creates a favorable work environment by improving the relationship between the company and its employees (Idowu, 2017). Notably, motivation promotes corporation and coordination in the company, and all the employees work in harmony. Using performance appraisal as a motivational tool, I will increase the rate of interaction with the employees and provide performance feedback. According to (Varma, 2017), feedback forms the basis upon which the employees improve their performance. Also, it gives insights to the company that may otherwise be invisible to the management; the insights help make important decisions concerning the work environment.
Conclusion
Motivated employees are willing and able to face daily challenges at work. When they are appreciated, motivated employees feel I understand their importance. They will direct all their efforts to better the company and achieve its strategic goals and objectives. Therefore, motivation helps increase the performance of the employees and the entire organization. The management should recognize the value of employees in the company by using the performance appraisal method because it benefits both the employee and the organization. Through performance appraisal, Amazon can make critical decisions that positively impact the work environment and the company at large.
