Self-Assessment of Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethics

Effective management is crucial to the success of any organization. This is because superiors inspire their subordinates to work together for the organization’s greater good. Successful leaders are tenacious in the face of adversity. They take responsibility for their actions, learn from their mistakes, and motivate their coworkers to up their game. An effective leader is also humble and open to others’ points of view. They set excellent examples and are great role models. They show newcomers the right path to take.

Moreover, they promote the use of original thought to accomplish the aims. They have defined objectives, strategies, and benchmarks for success at the facilities. In this way, they can contribute to the facility’s overall success.

Also, an effective leader should not dwell excessively on issues but rather emphasize creating solutions and pursuing predetermined ends. Staff is encouraged to do their best through constructive criticism and the promise of future rewards. Consequently, this strengthens the bond between the team members and the leader (Antony, 2018). Lastly, a good leader is reliable, and his followers can feel safe sharing their concerns. However, a productive leader can only do their job with enough supplies, equipment, and a pleasant setting.

Section 1: Leadership and Collaboration Experience

I worked in the pediatrics department at Johns Hopkins Hospital for two years, from 2018 to 2021. I was willing to help with obstetric and gynecological treatment and pediatric crises. Among American medical facilities, Johns Hopkins Hospital is often considered among the best. They serve clients from all over the world from its base in Maryland. In 1889, the groundwork was laid for this hospital. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is a hospital branch specializing in treating children. At the intensive care unit, I helped babies who had been burned or had trouble breathing. In 2019, I was asked by my department head to supervise a team of eight interns. Interns are expected to provide services under the direction of a qualified supervisor. Interns benefit from this since it provides them with real-world experience.

As a team leader, I helped the interns carry out their responsibilities. I instructed them to conduct pertinent inquiries, talk to patients and their loved ones, and keep detailed records. I put them in teams to encourage communication, cooperation, and better results. I also tutored them in the EHR’s ins and outs. I emphasized the value of keeping a detailed medical record for each patient as a tool for providing quality treatment. I also helped the interns develop by providing constructive criticism of their work.

I inspired the interns to keep plugging away as transformational leaders. I made it a point to act morally and set an example for the interns. With the support of a transformational leader, employees are pushed to go above and beyond their job descriptions (Buil et al., 2019). I learned the interns’ skills and limitations by assigning them specific tasks. When I was stronger, I would help everyone else overcome their limitations. Their participation boosted teamwork and problem-solving abilities. In addition, I made them a part of the decision-making process so that everyone could have their voice heard without being shut down. I was also democratic in allowing the interns to voice their opinions and find solutions to problems. By doing so, I gave them a sense of agency and significance.

(Wallersted et al., 2019) found that when healthcare providers, patients, and family members are able to communicate effectively, everyone benefits. As a result, I worked hard to perfect my communication skills and teach them to my interns so they could effectively interact with patients, coworkers, and loved ones. Without interfering, I listened to what they had to say. While we were talking, I paid close attention to both their words and their body language. Moreover, being forthright and direct made sure that my words were received and understood. This guaranteed that all parties understood the information, facilitating efficient care delivery.

Section 2: Ethics Experience

As a pediatrician, I was exposed to many moral dilemmas during my practice. Even if the doctor disagrees with the parents’ decision, getting the child’s consent before providing care is crucial. Respecting the patient’s wishes is essential in the role of a doctor. In the event of an accident, for instance, in which neither set of parents is present, the situation becomes legally complex. When interns forget to disinfect their hands and wear masks before visiting the pediatric ward, ethical concerns may arise. Thus, I stress to the interns the significance of learning the hospital’s code of ethics to become acquainted with the established norms and regulations. Discharge from the hospital is possible if proper hygiene is not followed. Notifying appropriate authorities when an intern has been negligent or engaged in misconduct is crucial to fostering a safe and high-quality care environment (Writing Committee et al., 2020).

The code of ethics established by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) specifies the conduct expected of all ACHE members (Ki et al., 2018). For instance, despite repeated requests, one intern never wore a face mask while working in the unit. She should be terminated from the hospital if I can inform the head of her department. The patient’s safety was in jeopardy, so I invoked the code of ethics to ask the head of the department to give her a warning. In all that I do, I do so in a just, respectful, authoritative, and good-faith manner. Finally, I ensured that everyone followed the rules and regulations pertaining to healthcare administration. As such behavior undermines the respectability of a career in hospital administration, I abstained from participating in it.

Conclusion

To conclude, strong leadership is essential in the healthcare industry. In order to maximize productivity and client happiness, a good leader employs several techniques. They serve as examples for others to follow and are a source of inspiration for those around them. They facilitate group work and decision-making. However, the ACHE code of ethics should be used to help resolve ethical difficulties whenever possible.
