Leading and Managing in Nursing

Health facilities have meaningful, lucid, and coherent mission, vision, and philosophy statements that motivate and guide the health workers. Mission and vision form the basis of purpose in work and imbue the workers. The vision and philosophy vary from one health facility to another; thus, they form the motto, identity, or creed of each hospital (Yoder-Wise, 2018). In addition, the mission and vision spell out the objectives, goals, context, direction, and philosophy of importance to the nurses (Velmurugan, 2017). The statements give meaning to the employees and the clients. Therefore, vision, mission, and philosophy are essential platforms that guide the behavior of clients, workers, and leaders in an organization.

I work at Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains in the med-surg unit. Chilton’s vision is a world-class patient-centered specialized care hospital’. The vision shows that nurses and doctors in the facility aim to provide quality, specialized care dependent on patients’ needs and preferences. The vision promotes collaboration and teamwork among staff in providing patient-centered specialized care. The mission is ‘to optimize patient experience through innovative, evidence-based specialized healthcare; facilitate training and research; and participate in national health policy formulation’. The mission shows the duty, responsibility, and scope of practice of the hospital. Workers have the responsibility to optimize patient health outcomes, participate in research, train and educate nurse students and participate in policy formulation.

Moreover, as nurses, we are guided by key core values, which are; accountability, integrity, professionalism, team spirit, customer focus, and security and safety. The values align with my beliefs and values. I believe in the collaboration of care with nurses, doctors, clients, and family members for better outcomes for the patient. In addition, the care services should be based on the patient’s needs and preferences. The client’s autonomy should be respected at all times and situations. Nurses also should be responsible and accountable for their actions at work. They should own their mistakes, correct them and learn from them. The facility was into; 50 wards (each headed by chief nursing officers), 22 out-patient clinics, 24 theatres (with 16 specialized clinics), and accident and emergency departments allocated over 650 nurses.

Nursing strategic plan shows a roadmap to the future. It demonstrates direction for nurses to follow and reenergizes them. Strong and comprehensive strategic plan is crucial in achieving quality patient care and optimum outcomes (Schober, 2017). The US health care system is complex and thus necessitates a comprehensive strategic plan for guiding nurses in their duties. Moreover, strategic plans define the nurse’s vision, assess their current situation, set objectives and priorities, state responsibilities, and measure and audit the results. Strategic plan is a prospective strategy of anticipation (Yoder-Wise, 2018). As a result, strategic planning motivates nurses to increase their efforts and work together to achieve the set plan.

The nursing strategic goals are; 1) To be among the best top 10 medical health centers in the nation adhering to proper hand washing techniques in 2023. Interventions; 1) Provide continuous medical education (attainable and relevant) on proper handwashing techniques to nurses thrice a week (measurable) for one month (timebound and it is smart). 2) Install handwashing sinks and soaps in every patient’s room (relevant, achievable, and achievable) for nurses by 12th May 2023 (timeline and it is smart).

Goal 2) To strengthen staff engagement and support at the workplace. Actions to be taken are; 1) Organize staff dinners (relevant and attainable) once a month (measurable)for interaction and bonding out of work for three months (relevant and smart). 2) Carry out teaching presentation sessions by staff members depending on their specialization (relevant) twice a week for 30 minutes (achievable and measurable) to allow members to recognize skills, experience, and knowledge of individual nurses for four months (timebound and smart). Therefore, each goal and action should be SMART (smart, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timebound
