This source material investigated some of the ethical challenges faced by counselors. Hill et al. (2022) used participants currently practicing as certified rehabilitation counselors. A mixed-method survey was the applied data collection method in this study. The researcher used thematic analysis to analyze the responses provided by the rehabilitation counselors. The study findings indicated that counselors often face ethical challenges related to maintaining confidentiality, dual relationships, informed consent, privacy and managing conflict of interests. This source is essential in my study since it provides an in-depth analysis of some of the ethical issues experienced by counselors handling substance abuse cases.

This article discusses the research findings on the ethical challenges of counselors in the context of Oklahoma, a case study that was conducted by Herron (2021). The researcher provided crucial statistical data on substance abuse expenses in Oklahoma by stating that the government spends $2 billion annually on substance abuse counseling and related costs. Semi-structured interviews were the primary data collection method applied by the researcher. Some of the identified ethical issues include confidentiality and therapeutic boundaries. I have chosen this source material due to its high authoritativeness; The researcher’s use of statistical data adds to its authoritativeness. It will be a great value add to my research.

This article highlights the findings of a research study conducted during the Covid 19 pandemic on the ethical dilemmas facing substance abuse counselors. The study data collection method was interviews with 18 front-line counselors in various substance abuse treatment programs. The findings revealed that most counselors struggled with technology use, boundary therapy, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality. The results of the study were crucial in highlighting some of the ways in which counselors can tackle ethical dilemmas in the future. This article serves as essential reference material in my research since it is quite detailed, covers my research topic widely and provides possible interventions to ethical dilemmas such as ensuring there is continuous ongoing training for counselors.

This source material discusses the ethical challenges experienced by counselors working with cannabis abusers in the United States. This article highlights some of the challenges counselors face whenever the addicts of cannabis disclose to them that they are self-medicating. Professionalism is one of the ethical dilemmas discussed in the article. Counselors are often confronted with the challenge of not knowing how to react to abusers in a professional manner and how to show empathy at the same time. The article further expounds on the mental health challenges experienced by cannabis abusers. This article is an important resource for my study since it covers the ethical dilemmas of counselors in cannabis substance abuse centers in the context of the United States.

The peer review article “Ethical and Professional Issues in Addiction Counseling” by NAADAC discusses some ethical challenges encountered in addition to counseling. Informed consent, professional boundaries and confidentiality are the ethical challenges widely discussed in the article. This source material further highlights the importance of a client-centered approach in counseling and having high ethical competence when handling substance abuse people. Professional training and staying informed on current and upcoming ethical practices are also highlighted to be integral to any counselor. Indeed, this resource will be helpful in my research due to the valuable insights it discusses regarding my research topic.
