The psychological concepts that I will use in my career and life

Problem Solving

One of the crucial psychological concept that I will use throughout my law enforcement career is problem solving. In the seventh chapter of Psychology 2e by Spielman et al. (2020), “Thinking and Intelligence”, the authors claim that effective problem solving strategies require a plan of action to find a solution (p. 222). One of the main problem solving strategies that I will use throughout my career is heuristic evaluation. This problem solving framework will enable me to work backwards by breaking a case into small parts. For instance, I can look at the suspects, their locations, their actions, and the impact of their operations. This will help me to connect the dots and have a clear understanding of everything in the case, which will help me determine the innocent and guilty parties. I can also use the trial-and-error problem solving strategy in my life by continuing to try different solutions until I solve any issues.

Intelligence and Creativity

Intelligence and creativity are crucial necessities of law enforcement due to the complexity of some cases. Spielman et al. (2020) also discuss the importance of intelligence and creativity in the seventh chapter, “Thinking and Intelligence” (p. 228). I can use practical intelligence in my life by using solutions that have worked for me in the past by applying knowledge based on my experiences. Practical intelligence will also help me solve any cases similar to those that I have solved in the past. Also, I will use analytical intelligence and my problem solving skills to evaluate, compare, contrast, and judge cases to identify the culprits to determine the best course of action. On the other hand, I need creativity in my life and career as it helps me formulate and discover new ideas and possibilities. For instance, in my law enforcement career, I can be creative in terms of formulating new ways to analyze cases, such as using technology.

Attitudes and Persuasion

In the twelfth chapter, “Social Psychology”, Spielman et al. (2020) discuss how attitudes and persuasion impact individual and group behavior (p. 409). I can understand the attitudes that I have developed toward particular issues in my life due to my environment and social norms. I should learn how to develop a positive attitude toward significant issues such as my health. Also, in my law enforcement career, I should develop a positive attitude towards solving complex cases that will be mentally challenging. Moreover, persuasion is another psychological concept that I will apply in my life and career. When talking to people, I need to learn how to be persuasive without exploiting them to get what I want at their expense. Also, in my law enforcement career, I should learn how to persuade individuals to open up about what they have witnessed in relation to a case. This is crucial as in some cases, I will need to persuade the culprits to get their confessions.

Regulation of Stress

Spielman et al. (2020) argue that coping with stress is crucial to overcome the mental challenges that we experience in the fourteenth chapter, “Stress, Lifestyle, and Health” (p. 514). Ghalib et al. (2021) study the relationship between work-life balance, job performance, and the life satisfaction among police officers. This article’s findings relate to my application of effective stress regulation in my career and life. In the article, there is a positive correlation between work-life balance, job performance, and life satisfaction. Therefore, by coping with stress in my law enforcement career, I will have a great work-life balance since I will be able to deal with the pressure at home and at work. Also, based on the article by Ghalib et al. (2021), due to my great work-life balance, I will be able to perform well at my job. This will make me feel satisfied with my life as I am doing what I must in my law enforcement career to serve the community.

Conclusion

In conclusion, psychology will be crucial throughout my law enforcement career regardless of the field I decide to pursue. I need to improve my problem solving skills to help me make wise decisions in my life and career. Also, I should enhance my intelligence and creativity by increasing my knowledge in law enforcement. I need to have an overall positive attitude towards life and I should learn how to be persuasive during interrogations. Also, I must have effective coping strategies to deal with stress to have a great work-life balance and be satisfied with my performance at work.
