Definition of College Housing

Students on campus necessitate clean housing facilities that are safe and secure for their involvement. Therefore, it is the duty of a university or a college administration to provide the student with housing facilities. Student housing entails a building or a segment of a building, mainly for the domestic purposes of learners attending a learning institution. However, in the contemporary economy, students’ housing has been significantly replaced by room and board facilities that offer modern and comfortable living. In addition, basic needs on campus tend to increase with students demanding extra services such as internet and gym equipment. In this essay, I present the definition of room and board in the context of college housing and analyze how the definition can be applied to the context of the college I attend, Miami University.

The Formal Definition

Room and board entail a phrase that describes a situation in which, in exchange for certain charges or other deliberations, an individual is provided with a living space accompanied by means on a comprehensive basis (Bertolas, Krejci, and Stanley 21). This situation mostly ensues at a fee, especially in tertiary level learning institutions encompassing universities and colleges. Also, it is a standard hotel-style housing for vacations or short stays across the US. The characteristics of a room and board are that it is spacious compared to other housing amenities on campus, a comprehensive meal plan usually accompanies it, and the charges are relatively higher compared to hostels and other living spaces such as rentals. Room and board can be considered a convenient arrangement that permits learners to be accommodated in the universities and colleges with ease. Students can’t achieve success without excellent housing support. The room and board amenities provide security and avoid the occurrence of any uncertainties during the learning process.

Definition by Negation

Room and board are generally rentals, but it is not the only option of renting. Room and board tend to add extra costs and sum up a large portion of a learner’s total campus bill, coming only second to the tuition fee (Jacob, McCall, and Stange 112). Students and their parents need to develop strategic plans and budgets for the room and board charges. Some colleges in the US have a room and board budget for learners living inside the college. In contrast, others provide apartments that are operated housing for students living outside the campus environment. The qualified room and board costs entail both off and on-campus housing charges provided that they are incurred in times of an academic duration where a student had enrolled. It is necessary that any student preparing to join campus consider the alternative of a room and board alternative.

Off-Campus living

It was formerly not a walk in the park finding off-campus housing at the institution. However, college pads have fixed the challenge by providing rooms and boards in Oxford, OH. Students can get houses 18 months before they move in. The rooms and boards have an array of options that meet the students’ interests and diverse needs for their maximum comfort to have an enjoyable study. However, the first and second-year undergraduate students do not live off-campus and therefore is a reserve for the third and fourth-year students.

Housing in Miami University

Housing is an essential aspect of undergraduate study at Miami University and is highlighted in the university’s mission statement. 1st and 2nd-year students are required by the institution to live inside the campus so that they may connect and successfully adjust to the college experience. The institution has rooms and boards that are very prestigious for the 1st and second years to live. The most notable and oldest are Elliot and Stoddard’s halls built in 1828 and 1835, respectively. The institution boasts of 46 houses organized into eight quads throughout the campus. The quads include central, academic east, north and south quads and western campus and heritage commons. The institution allows its undergraduate students to choose any of the 35 theme-based living-learning communities (LLC). Students are grouped into one or more classes that support their transition into the liberal art courses and facilitate their learning through the LLCs.

Housing is an essential feature for students as it influences their mental health and how they view the university climate. The formal definition of room and board is a situation in which, in exchange for certain charges or other deliberations, an individual is provided with a living space accompanied by means on a comprehensive basis. The definition by the negation of room and board is that they are generally rentals, but it is not the only option of renting. Room and board tend to add extra costs and sum up a large portion of a learner’s total campus bill, only second to the tuition fee. It is healthy living inside Miami campus because the tuition is guaranteed, and therefore the costs are manageable. Additionally, the prestigious housing in the university provides the students with a chance of staying connected and accessing school activities. The institution also provides off-campus living rooms and boards in Oxford, OH, with an array of options that meet the students’ interests and diverse needs.
