Kant distinguishes between acting from obligation and acting in line with commitment because he understands that it can be challenging to ascertain someone’s intentions. Let’s use the scenario of three young men who spot an older woman needing assistance from across the street to demonstrate this contrast. Man A decides to assist the woman across the street since he knows he would feel bad all day if he didn’t. Since Mrs. Wilson is his neighbor and Mrs. Wilson bakes the tastiest cookies in the neighborhood, Man B chooses to assist the woman across the street. Man B helps her because he believes he will be compensated. Man C decides to assist the woman from across the road since it is morally correct to do so, and he is aware of his responsibility to help those in need whenever he can.

The outcome is the same for all three people. The woman is assisted in crossing the roadway. All three young men would be ethically commendable if we were to approach this from the standpoint of utility since, in each situation, pleasure as a well is raised or pain is relieved. Kant, however, believes that only Man C’s activities have moral value since he is aware of the moral obligation and acts following it (Oyinbo et al.). The other two are motivated by anything other than their obligations; they only behave following the law.
