My Best Birthday Present

Sophie thinks that she owns the house and everything in it and that is why it is always difficult to disturb her comfort when she is asleep. In most cases, she always gets her wish granted on the spot since her authoritative and menacing eyes mean business. At three years of age, she commands even other cats in the neighborhood and everybody believes that she is a bully. My sister Anne brought Sophie home on the eve of my thirtieth birthday. She was wrapped in warm clothes and apart from the furs that were scattered on the cloth’s surface it was difficult to tell what Anne was carrying in her tiny arms. Sophie was and is still the best birthday gift I have ever received in my entire life.

Cats are social and friendly pets and that is why most people prefer them to dogs (Marsa-Sambola, Williams, Muldoon, Lawrence, Connor, & Currie, 2017). Sophie is the friendliest pet I have ever met in my entire life, Sometimes I look at her eyes when I am in trouble and it always seems as if she knows exactly what I am going through. I remember one day coming from college late and disappointed in the manner my assignment marks had miraculously disappeared. I was infuriated and did not anybody to talk to me. My mind was set on my bed and nothing would have changed it. Just as I was about to close the bedroom door Sophie dashed in purring and rubbing her soft fur against my legs. I wanted to push her away, lock the door and fall dead asleep. I was wrong. She did not want to hear or watch none of this. Within a split second, she had jumped on my bed and was rolling her body to express dissatisfaction in the manner I had entered the house gloomily. I threw a glimpse at her and immediately all my disappointments oozed out of my body. I was relaxed instantly. Sophie made me happy. She acted a true friend when all around me seemed dark and bleak.

Pet experts argue that cats are playful and this makes them the best companions for people, especially children and single individuals (Galvan & Vonk, 2016). Sophie is hyperactive and no night passes without her disturbing my peace. She is always asleep most of the time during the day when I am at work. However, hell breaks loose immediately she hears the sound of my engine car cracking at the gate. She always sits waiting for me at the right-hand side window of my kitchen since this is where she can have a good view of anybody entering the compound. At best, she would come to meet me at the door and as soon as I flung it open she would sink her tiny teeth in my trouser trying to push me to walk very fast into the house. I would burst out laughing looking at how she struggles to pull me. The scene looks like a rabbit trying to wrestle a rhino.

Above all, cats are known to keep off rats and other small rodents (Marsa-Sambola, Williams, Muldoon, Lawrence, Connor, & Currie, 2017). I do not know where all the rats disappeared to since Sophie came into my house. Rats had made my house an Olympics arena and would do numerous marathons every time disturbing my sleep and scaring the tiny courage out of me. Also, I can comfortably admit that nowadays my clothes remain intact for a long time. I had always wondered why the rats in my house had a passion for tearing and eating pieces of my clothes, especially my vests and shirts. Luckily, Sophie was just the perfect remedy to stop this nuisance. However, my worry is that I hope she is not eating them since I would shudder at the thought that she had digested more than 20 rats. I have maintained a good health record with my vet just in case she falls ill (I shake at this thought though).

I will always thank Anne for bringing Sophie into my life. Sophie is the best birthday gift I have and will ever receive from someone. There might be many other expensive birthday gifts people have given me in the past. However, Sophie’s companionship and playful nature make her an unrivaled birthday gift for me. Also, she has saved me sleepless nights of chasing rats in my house and the agony of meeting torn pieces of cloth on the floor.
