Importance of Nurses Distinguishing the Concepts of Health and Wellbeing

According to World Health Organization, a person is considered healthy based on three criteria: physical, mental, and social well-being (Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020, 2021). The absence of disease does not mean that a person is healthy, and this has been proven since the biopsychosocial model of health considers both the social and psychological factors. The psychological and social factors play a crucial role in determining if an individual is healthy. Even though this method of defining health helps ensure that all factors that affect a person are considered, the model receives criticism as others consider it unhelpful, especially since most people believe that the definition may mean that they are always unhealthy all the time. The well-being of a person mainly refers to what is ultimately suitable for a person and mainly revolves around a person’s self-interest. Nurses must distinguish the concepts of health and well-being since this will help determine the avenue to be addressed based on the root of health problems that the patients are experiencing (Brooker, 2018). Well-being can be divided into various types, including emotional well-being, mental well-being, physical well-being, and economic well-being. The various forms of well-being are closely linked as physical well-being is associated with emotional well-being, and when a person has better economic well-being, emotional well-being is improved (Section 3: Concepts of health and well-being, 2021). Concerning clinical psychology, well-being consists of biological, social, and psychological needs. Some issues such as life satisfaction affect a person’s psychological well-being, and thus they can be used as factors to determine a person’s health status. Health and well-being differ from one individual to another, and this means that equipping nurses with the knowledge of distinguishing the concepts of health and well-being can enable them to provide a treatment required by individuals (Brooker, 2018).

Critical considerations of health and well-being in case 1.

Case one involves Priya Persad, who is currently in the final year of primary school. Priya Persad faces different challenges that negatively affect her social and academic life. Notably, the young girl is losing interest in class matters. The “excessive” home chores can explain the direction that Priya Persad’s life is taking; hence balancing the pressured school life and the pressured working life becomes unbearable for her. Consequently, her well-being is negatively affected by these life pressure, which directly relates to education and social life; hence the two are affected. The fact remains that for a person to be considered healthy and well-being, everything that revolves around them should be good, and this plays a critical role in influencing the mental health of a person since such matters are often associated with psychology (Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020, 2021). Priya’s home tasks have affected her life due to fatigue, and she does not have time to associate with her friends, resulting in a dissatisfied life. Some concerns, such as life satisfaction, impact a person’s psychological well-being and may thus be used to establish a person’s health state (Choate, 2020).

Physically, Priya has been affected as the responsibilities could be leading to fatigue and the impacts of fatigue make her feel uninterested in other activities such as studying and socializing. She values the family, making her only interact with her brother Rishi. Social ties are significant and promote healthy living. Social ties have several benefits, including social support, mental health, and personal control. Mental health is the critical mechanism that works to shape physical health, and since Priya has been emotionally affected and cannot relate well with the other students, her psychological well-being has been affected. She may turn to unhealthy living, affecting her physical health. The World health organization terms mental health as the pivot of the overall health condition (Hanley & Williams, 2020).

Demonstrate how one key consideration of health can affect the health of the people involved.

Priya is the key player, and most of her actions affect the people surrounding her, including her parents and loving grandmother, who is trying to offer help, but her body is failing her. If Priya gets poor academic results, her parents are likely to suffer from a lack of satisfaction, and Priya will be affected since she will feel that she could have done better in her studies. Priya has been physically impacted since her obligations may be causing weariness, and the effects of exhaustion make her feel uninterested in other activities such as studying and socializing. She only loves her family, causing her to engage with her brother Rishi. Social connections are crucial because they encourage a healthy life. The fact that Priya is less social can affect the relationship between her parents. Her parents may start having the feeling of failing to meet their child’s expected needs, which can affect them psychologically. Mental health is the most critical health condition which the family would be experiencing (The risks of social isolation, 2021).

Considering the well-being of a person involves ensuring that all the decisions that are made are positive (Beyond Health Care: The Role of Social Determinants in Promoting Health and Health Equity, 2021). Priya’s health may suffer due to her tasks, especially if she begins to live a dissatisfied life. Since Priya is the protagonist, in this case, the nursing care which I would provide would mainly focus on Priya’s well-being. I would fast communicate with her and ensure that she opens up about her environment. Talking about matters which could be affecting her could give her emotional support. I would also talk to the parents to help them empathize with their daughter’s situation and provide them with information about health and well-being and how they could affect her mentally.

Considerations of health and well-being in case 2.

This case involves Robert and his family. Robert suffers from a moderate learning disability, while his father has a disability. The well-being of Robert has since been affected since his needs are not met, and he has been taken to a supported group home which makes him uncomfortable, and he has the urge to go home. Psychological and social aspects are important in deciding whether or not a person is healthy (Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020, 2021). A person’s well-being plays an essential role in a person’s mental health since difficulties are commonly tied to psychology. Even though the family made a tough decision, the decision does not serve Robert well, affecting him mentally. Mental health is viewed as the center of healthy living as health influences how a person lives and behaviors that affect physical health (Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020, 2021). It is necessary that even if complications are being experienced, the family should look for an alternative to ensure that the well-being of Robert is addressed.

Even though this method of defining health helps ensure that all factors that affect a person are considered, well-being consists of the biological, social, and psychological needs that must be met (Section 3: Concepts of health and well-being, 2021). The men currently living with Robert are offending him can affect him mentally. The men living with Robert have certain behaviors, such as touching his belongings, and although this may be seen as a minor issue, people with moderate learning disabilities such as Robert are significantly affected (Terlizzi and Norris, n.d.). Even though Ellen works hard to ensure that she visits Robert every morning, the fact remains that she is not leading a happy social life which could be had if Robert was at home helping her with the basic home chores.

One consideration in case 2 is likely to impact the health or well-being of the people involved.

Robert is being secluded from the people he loves and associates with, significantly impacting his mental health. Robert is likely to experience loneliness, and some problems are likely to arise when loneliness becomes chronic. Some of the problems which Robert is likely to experience include accelerated cognitive decline, depression, impaired executive function, impaired immunity, and poor sleep quality (Moderate General Learning Disability | National Council for Special Education – CPD and In-School Support, 2021). Robert is likely to adopt unhealthy habits, especially since his family is not close to him, and he may miss encouragement. Some of the challenges that Robert is experiencing a major challenge that might have a psychological impact on him, mainly because he does not like the actions of the men in the support group. People with moderate learning disabilities can get mental illness depending on their environment and character (Learning disabilities, 2021). Jim already has diabetes, and leaving Ellen to handle the two will result in fatigue, and the loneliness that she will experience will hurt her health. Loneliness and fatigue are mainly because Ellen will not have a helper, and Jim fails to offer a lively company similar to Robert’s since he has lost sight.

The well-being of Robert has been compromised because his preferences have not been considered, which can result in drawing other health issues. Robert is disappointed since he has been sent to a supported group home, which makes him uncomfortable, and he wants to return home. Even if the family made a difficult decision, it does not serve Robert well and can harm his mental health; as health determines how a person lives and actions that affect physical health, mental health is seen as the heart of healthy living. Even if issues arise, the family must seek a solution to protect Robert’s well-being. Because Robert is isolated from the people he loves and associates with, he may suffer psychologically. Robert is prone to developing bad habits, especially when his family is estranged from him, and he may lack motivation. Some of the difficulties that Robert is facing may have a psychological impact on him (Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020, 2021).
