Introduction
Throughout history, the concept of race has been utilized to defend and uphold repressive institutions and power structures. This has been especially clear in the labor market, where racism has been a significant factor in establishing and maintaining racial and class hierarchies. Racial hierarchies in the labor market have been established and upheld due to colonialism, slavery, and the imposition of foreign governance structures. Similar to how racial ideologies and the histories of colonialism and slavery have been exploited throughout history to create and sustain racial hierarchies in the workplace. The logic of slavery, the reason for genocide, the sense of Orientalism, the conquest and control of land and resources, and the imposition of foreign governing structures and legal systems are only a few examples of the methods used to establish such hierarchies. Using models from the course readings and lectures, this essay will examine the numerous ways that race has been used to create and perpetuate racial inequalities within the labor market. Through colonialism, slavery, and the imposition of foreign governing systems, racism has historically been utilized to establish and sustain racial hierarchies in the labor market, as shown by the readings and lectures for the course.

\Colonialism is one method by which race has been used to establish and uphold racial hierarchies in the labor market. The readings and lectures in the course show how colonialism has played a significant role in the establishment of European empires and how it has corresponded with the growth of capitalism and the nation-state (Moghadam et al, Pg. 1, 2019). The acquisition and control of another people’s land and resources through acts of genocide, slavery, and the installation of foreign political structures and legal systems is known as colonialism, as illustrated in the slides. According to the article “Right-Wing Populisms North and South,” colonialism was a significant contributor to the racial and ethnic hierarchies that still influence labor markets globally today (Moghadam et al, Pg. 3, 2019). This indicates how colonialism played a significant role in the development and upkeep of racial hierarchies in the labor market.
Slavery is another method that race has been utilized to establish and uphold racial hierarchies in the labor market (Supernuik, November 2022, Week 11). The slides describe how slaves were viewed as less than completely human and undeserving of basic rights, which helped establish and maintain racial hierarchies in the labor market. According to the article “Right-Wing Populisms North and South,” slavery was a significant contributor to the racial and ethnic hierarchies that still influence labor markets today (Moghadam et al, Pg. 2, 2019). This demonstrates how slavery contributed to the development and maintenance of racial hierarchies in the labor market.
Similarly, the logic of slavery has also been utilized to create and sustain racial inequalities in the labor market, along with conceptions of race and histories of colonialism and slavery. The primary tenet of white supremacy, according to Andrea Smith, is the logic of slavery, which views slaves as not fully human and hence unworthy of fundamental rights (Supernuik, November 2022, Week 11). Due to the perception that they do not have the same chances and rights as persons of a white background, this has been utilized to disadvantage people of color in the workforce. This can be observed in the history of slavery in the United States, where African Americans experienced discrimination on the job market and were viewed as second-class citizens. The logic of Orientalism is another method by which racial ideologies and histories of colonialism and slavery have been employed to establish and uphold racial hierarchies in the labor market. Edward Said came up with this concept, which speaks to how Europeans perceived themselves as having a superior civilization to what they perceived as the inferior, backward, and strange people of the “Orient” (Supernuik, November 2022, Week 11). Due to the perception that they do not have the same chances and rights as persons of a white background, this has been utilized to disadvantage people of color in the workforce. People of color were denied access to resources and rights and disadvantaged in the labor market due to their race, as seen by the history of immigration in the United States.
The imposition of external regulating structures is the final way that race has been used to establish and sustain racial hierarchies in the labor market (Supernuik, November 2022, Week 11). In order to promote the establishment and maintenance of racial hierarchies in the labor market, the slides demonstrate how Orientalism was utilized to construct Europeans as superior to the “inferior, backward, and exotic inhabitants of the Orient.” Governments have frequently utilized immigration and nationality laws to favor certain groups over others and to support the interests of the dominant groups, according to the article “The Slippery Slope of ‘Buy American’ Campaigns” (Brooks, Np. 2017). This demonstrates how the establishment and maintenance of racial hierarchies in the labor market have been made possible by the imposition of external regulating institutions.

In conclusion, this essay has examined the several ways that colonialism and slavery, as well as concepts of race, have been utilized to create and uphold racial inequalities in the labor market. The logic of slavery, the logic of genocide, the logic of Orientalism, the acquisition and control of land and resources, and the imposition of external governmental structures and legal systems have all been used to establish such hierarchies. People of color have been denied access to resources and rights and are disadvantaged in the labor market due to their race, as evidenced by the history of colonialism, slavery, and immigration in various regions of the world. It has been established that racial hierarchies in the labor market have been established and maintained through the use of colonialism, slavery, and the imposing of external regulatory institutions. Therefore, it is evident that racism has always been utilized to establish and uphold racial hierarchies in the labor market.
