Building Awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract 

Achieving a fulfilling life is an aspiration for all people in the world, but for autistic persons, the aspiration is usually affected by challenges. A clear discussion of different challenges affecting autistic persons shall be performed to explore the significance of the condition and assess its presenting nature so that awareness can be developed. All persons in society must recognize individuals’ rights to a good quality of life, but if there is a disorder, there are inevitable obstructions to such life. A comprehensive definition of autistic disorder shall be provided, along with a discussion of its signs and symptoms. To build more awareness, an exploration of the spectrum, including related conditions like ADHD, Asperger’s, and PDD, shall be performed. The paper shall emphasize the crucial role of education and awareness concerning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will get done to indicate how societal misconceptions and personal issues affecting the persons need to be addressed. There is a proper method of improving overall well-being after determining how support services and therapy options are best to handle ASD. A comprehensive awareness process is best for managing ASD so that all persons in society will provide improvement and support for persons affected by the condition.

Introduction

A good quality of life is highly imperative for all people since it influences them to experience different events in life with ease. Developmental disorders affect people’s lives by influencing their capability to live in a way other people find normal. People with developmental disorders find it hard to enjoy good quality, and specifically, persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can get adversely affected. ASD is a complex neurological condition that affects the development of people by affecting their behavior, communication skills, and social interaction capability (Hodges et al., 2020). Autism can present itself as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Asperger’s syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) (Hodges et al., 2020). Further autism presents as PDD and Asperger’s, whereby the individual involved can display repetitive behaviors, difficulty in handling social interactions, and restricted interests (Hodges et al., 2020). The signs and symptoms of autism include repetitive behaviors, challenges in social interaction, and difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication (Tsai et al., 2020). It is proper to recognize these symptoms early so that interventions and support can be implemented. Since autism has a spectrum nature, it is clear that acknowledging the variability of its presentation is proper so that there can be discovery of whether it is mild or severe. Based on the diversity of the nature of autism, it is clear that it eliminates the capability of people to live a fulfilling life. The condition causes developmental disorders that often hinder people’s capability of fully engaging in society, interacting well with others, and pursuing their goals. Development of awareness of autism is proper to broaden its understanding and foster an inclusive environment that will support the diverse needs of individuals on the autism spectrum. Exploring the different complexities of ASD is proper to illustrate its methods of manifestation and common challenges that individuals encounter, and doing this shall create awareness of the disorder. Then, suitable therapy methods will be explained.

The Importance of Being Informed About ASD

Being informed about ASD is highly imperative because it is a condition affecting many people in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were six million children between the ages of 3 and 17 who were diagnosed with ADHD using a survey conducted on data from 2016-2019 (CDC, 2023). The dataset further reveals that boys are more likely to get diagnosed than girls at the rate of 13% and 6%, respectively (CDC, 2023). The graph in Appendix 1 indicates the number of children, in millions, who have been diagnosed with ADHD, and this is proper for review since ADHD is in the autism spectrum (CDC, 2023). Based on these facts, it is imperative to educate people who do not know about ASD since even though there has been increased awareness of the issue during the past years, a full understanding of the disorder has not been understood. Building awareness is the process of educating people who do not know about the condition since many might not know due to outdated information and stereotypes. Awareness can be built by addressing the first issue of society’s misconceptions and outdated information.

In terms of society’s misconception, some people believe that individuals with ASD do not have emotion or empathy, but really, the individuals do have emotions, but they struggle to express them or interpret them properly (Chen et al., 2021). Another misconception is that ASD only affects children, which is not the case because it can be a lifelong condition (Chen et al., 2021). Based on these misconceptions, the occurrence of ASD influences persons in society to get affected by a variety of conditions that reduce their capability of integrating well with other individuals. There is a need to build awareness since such a process will educate the public about existing misconceptions. When this initial process is implemented, it will be possible for individuals with ASD to express themselves in their unique way and then encounter an informed society. The informed society will foster empathy for the persons involved by establishing acceptance and inclusive attitudes that promote supportive environments for persons with ASD.

Building awareness is proper because it ensures early identification of the condition will be performed and that there will be an opportunity for suitable interventions once different people gain knowledge. In today’s medical field, many individuals live with ASD that is undiagnosed, and also those who receive delayed diagnosis by focusing on the misconception that ASD only affects children (Chen et al., 2021). Based on these facts, recognizing that ASD is a lifelong condition is proper since it shall establish early screening and interventions that enable the process to be performed using advanced methods that improve quality of life. Building awareness is possible by using resources like healthcare education, media communication, and one-on-one sessions with individuals. Such processes have a high likelihood of advocating for appropriate services for handling ASD for individuals at various stages of their lives. Support for the awareness process can be through community resources like meetings, employment support, and initiatives for more accessible care. Improvement of the overall capability of handling healthcare development will be possible.

An inclusive society is highly imperative because such a process will establish inclusion. It is possible to promote an inclusive environment in settings like community centers, schools, workplaces, and hospitals so that all persons involved in supporting persons with ASD can receive professional advice. Engaging different people in the settings mentioned will implement a reliable method for supporting their needs since they can provide information on what they already know about the condition and then receive directives indicating their improvement of overall understanding. The use of accommodative instructional processes is highly imperative for all persons who will be involved in gaining an education in the settings as there shall be a suitable instructional development trend. It is possible to foster understanding among different persons by creating the expected levels of community improvement and empowerment operations.

The second issue affecting awareness is outdated information, which causes people to believe in misunderstandings and myths that affect their overall capability to remain neutral when dealing with ASD awareness. Common beliefs about the cause of autism include vaccination, problems with a mother’s pregnancy, age of parents, spiritual factors, religious factors, and children’s health conditions (Chen et al., 2021). All these indicate outdated information, which affects the capability of children to receive care when their disorder immediately gets discovered, and other issues for persons of different ages when they lack suitable support. The misconception usually makes the conditions that affected persons go through become more adverse and lack a clear direction to facilitate better conditions in life. Persistence of the issues in certain communities usually causes the persons involved to lack updated information that can improve the management of autism (Chen et al., 2021). A resulting issue is a lack of capability to offer support to persons with ASD.

Handling someone who has ASD is highly imperative in the effort to be informed. A person with ASD needs to be handled with empathy and understanding, which all require advanced capability of addressing their issues. First, practicing patience is highly imperative to assist someone with ASD since they take more time to process information and respond to social cues (Chen et al., 2021). The technique will ensure they can communicate in proper ways that advance understanding of the shared message. Second, being clear and direct is imperative because it allows a communication process with persons with ASD to be performed without any figurative language or hard statements they might not understand. Third, respect for the sensory sensitivity of persons with ASD is imperative since it ensures the person interacting with them will create a calm environment. Fourth, avoiding making assumptions is proper so that whatever an intended communication is for the autistic person will be understood as they know best.

Preventing delays that might affect autistic persons as they need support is possible by improving access to services like educational programs, diagnostic evaluations, and therapies (Chen et al., 2021). Official organizations can take up this duty, which will also promote collaboration among educators, community organizations, and healthcare providers in the best ways to advance the multidisciplinary approach to caring for autistic persons (Chen et al., 2021). Acceptance is also required by autistic people so that they interact with other people and learn about kindness, compassion, and patience (Chen et al., 2021). With such considerations, it is possible to foster inclusivity, which is needed for building awareness of the presence of autism and ensuring better support gets presented to the persons involved.

Different Challenges that Come with ASD

Persons diagnosed with ASD and those who interact with the affected person encounter a variety of challenges. Addressing the challenges is highly imperative by building awareness and promoting inclusivity, which is possible when the different persons involved are provided with information on how to improve their overall well-being. The challenges affecting persons diagnosed with ASD can be addressed in four distinct aspects, which are social/communication issues, restricted/repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities, and difficulty intertwining in society.

First, there are social/communication issues affecting persons with ASD in terms of their struggle to communicate with other people and to engage in social environments. Autistic persons can experience a communication breakdown when they lack the capability to speak about their internal feelings, thoughts, or desires, and when this occurs, they experience negative feelings of incapacity of self-expression (Sturrock et al., 2021). Negative feelings they get can be linked to alienation from society and feelings of isolation. Communication challenges can further be linked to a lack of maintaining eye contact, engaging in reciprocal conversations, and difficulty interpreting social cues. All these lead to adverse well-being for the persons involved. It becomes hard for them to understand nonverbal communication, which further exacerbates their social well-being. There is an unpredictable outcome for autistic children as they find it hard to navigate diverse social scenes in life, which is dangerous to their well-being.

Second, restricted/repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities are a condition related to ASD. The individuals involved can be fixated on specific topics or objects, they can rock their bodies, and also flap their hands as techniques of repetitive and repetitive behaviors. When this occurs, the behaviors involved can be comforting to the autistic person but cause them to be affected by a lack of conformity to societal structures. When autistic persons engage in the behaviors, they obtain a sense of control, but this is not always proper since it interferes with their social interactions (Crompton et al., 2020). It is challenging to engage in the behaviors since it limits the capability of exploring new activities and connecting to other people. Other behavioral issues can be tantrums, sensitivity to noise or textures, and sensory overload (Rinaldi et al., 2022). Autistic people can also get affected when attempting to change their routine or deal with unexpected events, which is improper for their overall development. Difficulty coping with transitions can cause major frustration and a lack of management of personal feelings.

Third, the difficulty of autistic persons integrating into society occurs because of their unconventional ways of paying attention, moving, or learning. For example, autistic persons require tailored learning and an accommodative environment so that they can access the curriculum properly. Schools are the best place to support autistic children by ensuring they get instructed by special needs teachers and a school psychologist so that there can be advanced support for their needs (Leifler et al., 2020). It is proper for educational settings to change their systems so that there will be unique techniques for meeting the diverse needs of students with ASD. The challenges progress, causing feelings of inadequacy and a problem accessing the curriculum effectively. In the workplace, persons with ASD can be affected by difficulties in adhering to conventional norms of behavior and the possibility of navigating social dynamics (Leaf et al., 2021). All the challenges above can be an obstacle for autistic persons, as discussed, and further due to the difficulty of establishing conformity to societal expectations.

There can be obstacles when attempting to gain a fulfilling life for autistic persons due to their incapability to form social relationships and adhere to societal expectations. All these influence feelings of isolation and loneliness that undermine the overall well-being of an autistic person. Persons with ASD always get confined to routines and narrow interests that make them dependent, thus reducing their capability to seek new interests (Hodges et al., 2020). All these obstacles limit personal growth, which is dangerous when attempting to maintain proper inclusion of autistic persons into society.

Therapy Options

ABA Therapy 

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is suitable for managing ASD because it involves evidence-based approaches to manage the different challenges experienced. As an early intervention, ASD will implement highly effective modification of behavioral patterns using reinforcement techniques and systematic observations (Chung et al., 2023). The therapy technique is done by providing an autistic person with different tasks and then requiring them to learn new skills using positive reinforcement (Chung et al., 2023). Common tasks include showering, meal preparation, dressing, engaging in conversation, greeting other people, reading, and learning game rules to play (Gitimoghaddam et al., 2022). The therapy technique ensures that different skills will be implemented as a comprehensive method for behavioral changes.

Positive reinforcement will then allow autistic persons to improve their health when they receive tangible rewards like sweets or coloring objects. The therapy technique generates better-learned behaviors for the persons as they get presented with new environments. In cases where they struggle with social skills, autistic persons will experience better capability of adhering to new contexts. An ABA therapist will implement strategies of generalization, like varying the environments the autistic person engages in to improve their capability of gaining independence across various settings (Gitimoghaddam et al., 2022). It will be possible for autistic persons to discover areas where they may lack in conforming to societal attitudes, and there shall then be a need for change.

ABA therapy includes antecedent, behavior, and consequence components, which determine the suitable understanding of the condition affecting the person. Understanding the antecedent is proper because the process ensures there is a verbal process for the child involved, and there can also be objects in the environment causing the autistic person to use verbal concepts (Cañigueral & Hamilton, 2019). In terms of behavior, the person’s response or lack of response will be identified to mean something, and in terms of consequence, these are the events that occur after a behavior (Cañigueral & Hamilton, 2019). Due to all these facts, therapists are required to systematically analyze factors that occur before autistic behavior so that they can understand the best interventions to make. Identification of triggers and reinforcements is proper for ABA therapy because it influences the capability to promote positive behavior.

ABA therapy ensures that autistic persons can practice self-regulation skills because they commonly struggle with emotional aspects and impulse control. An improvement in social interactions will be possible for autistic persons who experience adaptive functioning in their aspects and the capability to cope with frustrating events. The application of ABA therapy emphasizes the development of strategies for self-monitoring, which is highly imperative for autistic persons to ensure they gain self-management. Negative behaviors like self-injury, repetitive behaviors, aggression, and tantrums are common thus ABA therapy directly addresses such (Taverna et al., 2020). Using systematic assessments and intervention is proper to directly impact the conditions in a supportive method whereby the persons involved will experience reliable communication skills. It will be possible to implement adaptive alternatives for challenging behaviors, like being patient with other persons and focusing on support of their needs.

Speech Therapy 

ASD can be properly managed using speech therapy as the technique will provide reliable communication and language management. As a therapeutic process, speech therapy ensures there is improvement in verbal and non-verbal communication skills, which is highly imperative for autistic children. The process ensures the affected persons are provided with improvement in quality of life and social interactions, which is highly imperative at different stages of growth. Speech therapy focuses on language and communication challenges by supporting autistic persons to express themselves well, speak coherently, and choose words that are understandable (Osman et al., 2023). When in social contexts, persons with ASD get affected since their communication issues are more prominent. Speech therapists observe the specific issues affecting an autistic person and then tailor interventions that will ensure improvement. Clearly, speech therapy will improve communication methods that support autistic persons’ methods of communication.

Improvement of verbal communication skills is obtained using speech therapy since it ensures the persons involved can be taught about speech clarity, vocal expression, and improvement of articulation (Sandbank et al., 2020). The improvement is possible using vocalization drills, articulation exercises, and practice conversations that enable the persons involved to get provided with reliable capability of communicating well. Improvement of non-verbal communication is proper because it ensures autistic children can be present with the capability of using eye contact, body language, facial expressions, and gestures for communication (Maksimović et al., 2022). When persons are affected by ASD, they usually experience limited possibility of expressing themselves, and it becomes necessary to provide them with methods of self-expression. Autistic children will be able to use non-verbal communication processes that improve their capability of conforming to new standards of sharing information.

Occupational/Physical Therapy

Management of ASD is possible using occupational and physical therapy, which are comprehensive treatment plans. The therapies are crucial in addressing motor skills and the development of independence when performing daily activities, which are integral methods for enhancing the quality of life of persons with ASD. First, occupational therapy addresses fine motor skills to improve them using activities like coordination, dexterity, and targeted hand strength (

Park & Son, 2022).). Using such considerations, the therapists address difficulties faced by persons with ASD who find it hard to dress themselves, tie shoelaces, write, or use utensils (Park & Son, 2022). The therapy method improves fine motor coordination using repetitive practice and structured interventions that enhance the capability to improve the overall performance of different activities. In this way, it is possible to improve independence while performing daily activities.

Occupational therapy studies activities of daily living (ADLs) that ensure people are provided with essential skills for self-care. Independent living is highly imperative for persons with autism since they lack self-sustenance, which causes them to feel worse. Activities that occupational therapists can integrate include toileting, feeding, grooming, and dressing so that any challenges experienced during any of the activities can be dealt with immediately. Another occupational therapy method is the improvement of strength, posture, and balance, which are imperative for advancing the physical functioning of persons with ASD. Persons with ASD can experience deficits in balance, coordination, and muscle tone, which can all be addressed by reviewing their participation in physical activities (Roșca et al., 2022). It is possible to ensure improvements by instructing them to perform exercises and stretch their bodies so that they attain sufficient physical development (Roșca et al., 2022). An autistic person’s walking and capability of engaging in sports, running, and physical activities will be improved using the therapy method. All these physical activities improve muscle control, which allows the person with ASD to have better motor planning and execution of their activities (Hariri et al., 2022).

Conclusion

Exploring the different complexities of ASD is proper to illustrate its methods of manifestation and common challenges that individuals encounter, and doing this shall create awareness of the disorder. Then, suitable therapy methods will be explained. Persons with autism require a good quality of life since this process will enable them to live with ease. The fact that developmental disorders cause people to get affected results in the need to address ASD and its spectrum, which includes ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, and PDD. Common signs and symptoms of autism that are repetitive behaviors, difficulty in handling social interactions, and restricted interests need to be addressed early to ensure persons involved receive support. Improvement of the disorder’s management is proper since it will be possible to eliminate any developmental disorders that hinder a person’s capability of engaging in society. The therapy methods discussed above will ensure better quality of life for persons with ASD because they shall improve their muscle control, fine motor skills, control of body functioning, and improve participation in society.
