Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing

Introduction

Telehealth, a significant technological advancement in healthcare, has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Telehealth involves storing, transmitting, and retrieving health-related information and services via electronic communication. From remote diagnosis and monitoring to telemedicine, Telehealth provides people worldwide with healthcare access and convenience, regardless of distance or time. My interest in this technology topic of Telehealth is two-fold. First, I am fascinated by the potential impact telehealth can have, particularly in areas where access to proper medical resources is limited. Second, from a technological standpoint, I’m intrigued by the development of telehealth technology and its applications in different healthcare settings.

I employed a multi-pronged research process to complete my research into this topic. This included combing scholarly databases for relevant research material and web searches for relevant articles. In terms of databases, I used Scholarly Commons and Academic Search Elite. In contrast, for my web searches, I used a variety of search terms, such as “telehealth,” “telemedicine,” “telehealth technology,” and “remote diagnosis and monitoring.” With the data I found, I could compile a comprehensive overview of Telehealth and its current applications within the healthcare system.

The PubMed search engine was used to look for the publication. I chose this article since it did a lot of telehealth nursing research. The study gives an evidence-based synthesis of the constraints of online telehealth practices and the experiences described by telehealth facilitators. Information and communication technology is used in Telehealth to deliver medical services. A systematic review of specific qualitative investigations is included in the paper. A critical evaluation was applied to published articles between 1998 and 2019. A total of 30 studies were synthesized after the synthesis. Based on organizational characteristics, nurses’ views, skills, and attitudes, as well as the chosen articles, hurdles to telehealth application were found. One category found that telehealth service adoption needed to be improved by nurses’ attitudes and expertise.

Some aspects accompany the patient’s desire to use Telehealth. The transition from the conventional face-to-face nursing practice to the contemporary use of Telehealth must be gradual. The adoption of technology by both patients and operators requires a thorough conversation among healthcare professionals. Before deciding to use telehealth technology, all companies should evaluate their resource availability. Telehealth technology investments should come from various sources, including internal and external sources. The essay serves as a wake-up call for all healthcare stakeholders to make telehealth decisions. The use of telehealth technology necessitates initial information awareness and the absence of any doubtful objections to its acceptance.

Fronczek, A. E., Rouhana, N. A., & Kitchin, J. M. (2017). Enhancing telehealth education in nursing: Applying King’s conceptual framework and theory of goal attainment. Nursing Science Quarterly, 30(3), 209-213.

This article focuses on enhancing nurse education in Telehealth to raise patient safety and care quality. The authors assessed the effectiveness of telehealth education in nursing using King’s conceptual framework and the Theory of Goal Attainment. The authors contend that Telehealth has the power to transform the way healthcare is delivered and improve patient outcomes, but that to improve patient safety and the standard of care, it is essential to know what components of telehealth education should be covered and how to implement them. The article suggests that to assess and enhance the efficacy of telehealth education, nursing education can benefit from applying King’s conceptual framework and the Theory of Goal Attainment. According to the authors, the framework can offer a systematic way to assess the effectiveness of telehealth teaching and pinpoint areas that require improvement. For particular patient populations, this paradigm can also be utilized to develop telehealth therapies that are specially tailored. According to the authors, the framework can also spot and overcome barriers to telehealth adoption.

I decided to discuss this publication because it offers an in-depth evaluation of nurse telehealth teaching. Healthcare professionals should be aware of how Telehealth affects patient safety and the standard of care because the area is expanding quickly. This article offers a clear foundation for comprehending how Telehealth affects nursing education and how it might be applied to raise patient safety and care quality. For these reasons, this article is a crucial tool for medical professionals.

Conclusion and Recommendation

The chosen articles provide insights into the usage of telemedicine during the COVID-19 epidemic, barriers, the necessity of enhancing Telehealth in nursing education, and technological constraints. The healthcare system has advanced with the use of telehealth technology. The effective selection and implementation of telehealth technology in a healthcare context depends on organizational elements such as organizational policy, resources, training programs, and employee empowerment. A culture that accepts the use of new technologies and societal norms that tolerate its usage is necessary for the successful adoption of telehealth technology, as is a commitment to established policies and resources. Implementing training programs will help healthcare personnel become familiar with the technology and understand their role in its integration and application. Since they will be using the technology and benefiting from it, empowering employees is crucial to fostering adoption.

To support the use of technology in a healthcare context, it is critical to take into account how it will affect the organization, patient care and satisfaction, and the productivity of interdisciplinary teams. Healthcare firms may boost productivity, cut expenses, and enhance patient care and happiness through technological advancements. Telehealth has the ability to enhance the delivery of healthcare services, decrease wait times, and encourage interdisciplinary cooperation and team satisfaction. The use of telehealth technologies also gives medical personnel the chance to develop their knowledge and abilities and feel more satisfied in their work. Healthcare organizations can decide to employ telehealth technology justifiably by thoroughly reading the literature and taking into account the different organizational aspects.
