Sociology is a crucial principle that allows students to better understand their own lives, the social world, and an orientation towards social justice. Studies indicate that when students undertake sociology courses, they should learn to think sociologically, understand its scientific nature, and develop critical and complex thinking (Persell et al. 304-306). Students must be able to get beyond the individual when seeking to understand and explain the social world and thus think sociologically. Since sociology is a science, it is crucial for students to systematically collect and analyze data to make sense of people’s lived experiences (ASA News). Students must also be inquisitive and only believe some things they are told. This allows them to seek necessary data that backs up the claims. The sociology study is crucial as it allows students to understand the social aspect of communities better.
Choosing Sociology as a career path is appealing due to one major factor: experimental education. Wright defines experimental education as “learning activities that engage the learner directly in the phenomenon being studied (p. 116).” This aspect has always been fascinating as it is the field’s component. Unlike some courses, sociology offers its learners a chance to explore the social aspect firsthand through out-of-classroom experiences. Traveling is crucial for learners and professionals of the course as it allows them to understand society comprehensively. Experimental learning is, therefore, a significant factor in choosing the course.
The study of sociology results in numerous distinct professions, such as paralegals and legal assistants, public relations analysts, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) specialists (Study Hall). The daily activities of paralegals and legal assistants include conducting legal research and scheduling depositions and meetings. Their understanding of people and relationships is crucial, especially when dealing with sensitive materials of conflict. For instance, they can maneuver conflicts and provide the best approach to dealing with lawsuits or defamation cases based on research. Public relations analysts’ daily activities often include delivering speeches, creating campaigns, and making press releases. They must aid organizations in making a positive public image. DEI specialists make workplaces less toxic for non-dominant groups, developing programs that make it easier for historically oppressed groups to get employed (Study Hall). For instance, they may advise a company to hire more sexual minorities to increase its diversity and inclusion index. These professionals, therefore, are crucial in creating sustainable societies.
Exposure to sociology offers an insight into the importance of sociologists within society. The field offers numerous opportunities and options to students due to the vast array of professions. Sociologists are necessary in all industries as they act as a bridge between corporations and the individuals within society. By understanding the nature of people, organizations can make the best choices that will increase their revenue and promote better communities since they constitute a central aspect of production and social relations (Korczynski 963). The wide array of professions makes it easier for a student undertaking the course to succeed. As a result, as a student, I am more optimistic about succeeding and becoming a professional.
Study Hall speaks on the importance of post-graduate education. According to their research, students must get a master’s degree or Ph.D. after completing their graduate program to gain more experience. Moreover, it is also important to join professional organizations such as the International Sociological Association or the American Sociological Association as they help program graduates stay informed about new developments in the field (Study Hall). The next steps after graduating are to pursue additional education in the field and join a sociological association.
In conclusion, sociology is crucial as it aims to understand people’s lives and their relationships in society and champion social justice. It also allows learners to think sociologically, understand its scientific nature, and develop critical thinking. As a student, I find the field appealing due to experimental learning, a core component of the discipline. The program also offers an array of professions, such as paralegals and legal assistants, public relations analysts, and DEI specialists. The array of professions makes it more appealing and significantly increases the chances of succeeding. However, it is essential to pursue additional education, such as a Master’s and Ph.D., and join sociological associations after acquiring the graduate degree to increase these chances of success.
