CYC Philosophy
Becoming a professional Child and Youth Care worker is founded on the person becoming that has been an inspiration over time, and a desire to propagate my abilities to ends that suffice as being of assistance to others most especially the youths and children. My philosophy is guided by the need to be an advocate to the mentioned groups and be able to assert the need for the recognition and implementation of their basic rights. It is important to note that most issues such as neglect, destitution, mental health and drugs are major problems within this group. It is one of my greatest motivators to be able to assist these groups on wellness and better living Furthermore, the orphans, neglected children and youths are a key concern in society and my greatest wish is to change their lives for the better.
Having come from a good family, living in a big city in the US, I could very well see the disparity between the kind of life I lived compared to others, forced into destitution due to the lacking of family and societal support. It is a sorry state, seeing my age mates in the streets begging, being harassed and subsequently becoming criminals and drug addicts. All those sights were solemn. As I grew, I had the compelling need to lend help to these children and youths through to this profession.
CYC workers are guided by a set of moral and ethical clinical codes. My guiding values and principles are respect, empowering children and youths, Collaboration with all stakeholders, resilience, confidence and competency. A collaboration of these values and the workplace code serve as a guide toward ensuring my engagements offer utmost benefits and, result in a positive change within and outside the target communities.
Introduction
Anne with an E (https://kimoitv.com/title/43594/Anne-with-an-E.html), is a television show that follows through the life of a young orphan girl who coincidentally lands an adoption to a couple of unmarried siblings. However, they expect a boy and end up with Anne. This becomes the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the siblings as she asserts how being a girl is no different to being a boy. The show takes on the experiences of Anne as she tackles growing up as an orphan in the care of the siblings, the trials and the tribulations, as she tries to make friends and her continued longing for her parents. It is a show of dual societal perspectives, it shuns and subsequently becomes a cause of liveliness and emotional support for an individual.
As one engages with the show, there are some issues noted within the life of Anne with an E. She is presented as a strong high spirited protagonist. However, one comes across emotional disposition, seen as the character feels unwanted and tries to define her role as equal to the rest. Furthermore, she is subject to bad treatment by others who avoid interaction with her based on her orphan status. She is also seen as having anger episodes where she throws tantrums. Finally, the social problem of gender inequality reigns in the show and the protagonist comes across the fact at different time’s However, she is a pillar of her emotional disposition and does not alter her personality.
Anne with an E’s main problem as identified is the lack of an emotional support system that will care for her development and needs that align with such. The ‘Interactive Peer Theory ‘can do good in Anne’s situation. This incorporates a less adult minded interaction and rather takes on creating a friendly environment. The CYC professional would interact with the child as a peer and create an open and friendly relationship. The heartwarming interaction can enable the child to be more confident speaking to the professional as a friend. This can be a positive element at the beginning of the treatment and further develop a relationship with the child, one of trust love and support.
Human Nature
A discussion on human nature is extensive and has a long historical prelude that is reliably rich and coupled with variations with regards to its definition. The clarity of the term is asserted by many different theories that have been asserted by different individuals and characters all through human existence. This includes religious writings, Science, ancient philosophers and modern societal definitions.
Religious writing
A particular focus on the biblical definition goes to show humans as being creations of a God who is equally similar and being as His creations(Roughley, 2021). This said the biblical concept emphasizes guidelines of humanity based on the expectations of God. It stipulates humans as being social creatures with an elevated position compared to all other creatures. This said human nature is defined as one of the expectations(Roughley, 2021), based on the aforementioned guidelines, morals and behavioural identity.
Scientific
The scientific definition of human nature focuses more on the historical development of mankind, based on economical classifications(Roughley, 2021). According to science, human nature is essentially a difference that recognizes them from other creatures in other taxons. This said it exists that the scientific definition puts human beings as the most evolved creatures coming up thousands of years ago, through to the establishment of social interactions such as the beginning of agriculture and institution of laws and principles that asserts what ‘being’ Is(Roughley, 2021). As a taxon, Homo Sapiens (Roughley, 2021), have gone through fine changes from walking, talking, language development and institution of moral and ethical standards.
Ancient Philosophers
The credits for the definition of human nature, in this case, are Plato and Aristotle(Roughley, 2021). Focusing on Aristotle’s essentialism theory takes a look at human nature as being a collaboration of both the body and the soul into unison and contemporary activity. This said Aristotle explains that being human is what propagates one’s ability to interact with others fueled by the collaboration within the system(Roughley, 2021). Furthermore, Aristotle insists that there are things that distinguish human nature from other creatures(Roughley, 2021) such as the development of language, the ability of thought and interaction and the basis of behaviour and morality.
Modern Societal definitions
Societal Definitions of human nature is immensely contributed by the expectations and beliefs built upon millennia of human interaction(NewScientist, 2021). This said, human nature incorporates being playful, interest in learning and scientific explorations, conformity to a degree of stipulated rules and regulations that include taboos, morals and etiquette, engaging in activities such as farming, cooking, procreation and, human beings are social characters(NewScientist, 2021). This sums up a societal definition of human nature.
A collaboration of these definitions can very well elaborate on human nature. Some of the sources show similarities concerning what humans do and how they relate to each other. With this in mind, human nature is something that cannot be unilaterally defined by can be advanced as being based on morals, ethics and acceptable behaviour.
Goals of therapy
The goals of therapy are extensive. However, based on this discussion, the three main goals of therapy are response, remission and recovery.
Response
The first and primary goal of therapy is a response used by clinicians and therapists. It refers to the patient’s condition of being better and a feeling of the same(Serani, 2019). It occurs that within this stage of psychotherapy setting, the client’s mind is being more founded on self-acceptance and the feeling of satisfaction. It exists that such a response is not common for all. Some recover within a short period and positive outcomes can be noted(Serani, 2019). However, responses can differ in different patients, especially those suffering from depression or addiction and at times response can be disabled(Serani, 2019). In Anne’s case, such would be easily achievable.
Remission
Remission refers to the second state used by the clinicians or therapist to identify changes in the patient’s condition. In this particular case, looking at certain issues in children and youths with emotional problems, such a treatment refers to a point in which the client is understandably healthier and has little or no dependence on further treatment such as therapy and medication(Serani, 2019). However, this is a delicate point in therapy as there are chances of relays as the client gains confidence and does not constantly require therapy(Serani, 2019). Full remission is advised by the therapists before falling put on the treatment plan to ensure such does not occur
Recovery
Recovery refers to the final stage and goal of therapy inspired by therapists dealing with mental health issues(Serani, 2019). According to psychotherapy and clinicians, this is the period following four months of remission. It is similarly a delicate state as the clients try to recuperate, grow and become better with regards to the reasons behind their admission. In the case of youths and children, it suffices that such a period requires one to be more in contact with their therapist and continuously engage in routine activities(Serani, 2019). This stage sums up the therapeutic process and the individual can gradually resume their ordinary life.
Roles of a Therapist
In a similar context to the goals of therapy, the time of a therapist is extensive. The three selected roles are informative, facilitation of change and establishment of a relationship.
Informative
Guided by the moral ethics of CYC practice, it necessitates the role of the therapist to be the key figure in informing the client on their role in the interaction and the processes that will be engaged to ensure successful interaction(Fisher, 2017). This ensures the client feels comfortable and willingly indulges in the process. In therapy, the practitioner elaborates to the client the details of the program and the milestones that should be covered(Fisher, 2017). It serves as the first step to a productive process
Facilitation of change
This is a professional expectation of practitioners. This is a role whereby the therapist is primarily concerned with ensuring awareness, continued growth and psychological development(Fisher, 2017). It exists that a client, should be well mentored on their situation and the therapist takes a central role in guiding the client through the process(Fisher, 2017). This is the paramount purpose of therapy and one undertaking the profession is to set well elaborate plans to assist the client.
Building relationships
This accounts for an important prospect in therapy. Professionals employ this as a move to building a good rapport with the clients as a sure way of creating an environment that is enabling for the client(Fisher, 2017). This incorporates friendliness, empathy, attentive listening, kindness and tenderness. It helps establish trust and at the same time enable the therapist to acquire an understanding of the client(Fisher, 2017). In the primary stages of therapy, one can assert the clients’ responses by kicking off with these forms of introductions to activate the process and ensure positive results.
Visual Presentation
There are several theories in sociology and social work. Among them, three theories particularly serve as essential in CYC. These theories are Empowerment, Psycho-social Development and social learning.
Empowerment Theory

The image is a description of empowerment theory detailing the various techniques employed towards enabling individuals to take control of their lives(Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work., 2021). The purpose behind this selection of because to assert the clients’ emotional problems, it necessitates boldly trying to make them feel better and enabled even in their worst situations. The theory bears a three-dimensional approach that deals with the person’s emotion, character and relations(Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work., 2021). This theory incorporated various personal development methods and it is well suited for the client as it creates a position of control and the first step to self-actualization. This approach can be integrated into the treatment plan as the first resolve that is centred towards creating rapport with the client(Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work., 2021). The benefits from this method can be extended in enabling character development.
Psycho-social Development

The image represents the developmental stages as prescribed by Erik Erikson(2U, 2020). Looking at the client positioning in the show, it is evident that some developmental processes have been sidelined by the situation(2U, 2020). Employment of the techniques in this theory enables a clear and directed response to all individuals within their age group and their asserted problem that exists within a common platform(2U, 2020). This is a conclusive roundup of all elements of human life, with specific actions that a therapist can take, depending on the client’s disposition. These techniques and theory would serve as essential. Role in the treatment plan as it acknowledges the existence of emotional developmental issues(2U, 2020). It would help ensure successful deduction and a way forward in the process.
Social learning
(Courtesy of Google images)
The image represents the triangle of techniques in social learning developed by Albert Bandura. It elaborates that as part of the process of therapy, individuals can better learn to control their and other issues through learning from others and other elementary sources(Cherry, 2021). The selection made is because solutions to the problem can very much be learnt through social interaction and engagement in learning as a way of coping. This technique would be fulfilling to the suggested theory as it would serve to allow the client time to be conservative and identify the differences in emotional response(Cherry, 2021). It would serve as an added advantage to the client and beneficial to the process as the individuals would have more time to understand themselves outside the therapy.
Conclusion
Child and Youth care practice is an important role in social work and sociology as it enables the advocacy and intervention of young people. It is a worthwhile engagement that allows for action well before things get out of hand or irreparable damage has been done. Looking at the discussion, some problems that arise are not solely as a result of an individual’s choices but some occur accidentally. It is therefore important to develop methods that are more interactive, assured of good results.
