Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Counts

The importance and meaning of critical thinking are discussed next, with the latter predicated on rhetorical questions. Whenever a person is put in a situation requiring them to make a decision, they should weigh all available alternatives carefully (Facione, 2011). They need to consider the benefits and drawbacks of their options and make an informed choice. When someone’s brain is packed with a notion, they will not listen to any opposing arguments. As defined by specialists, uncritical thinkers do not look for confirmation, arguments, or other perspectives. In this article, the author highlights several approaches to critical thinking. This paper will summarize three of the approaches discussed in the article. Based on their weight, I will determine which approach is weightier and explain why I think so.

One of the approaches to critical thinking discussed in the article is interpretation. The article’s author defines this approach and argues that it means understanding and articulating the relevance of a broad range of facts, figures, anecdotes, opinions, practices, dogmas, norms, standards, guidelines, and standards (Facione, 2011). Categorization, deciphering significance, and elucidating meaning are all sub-skills that fall under the umbrella of interpretation. A common kind of interpretation is assuming someone’s motivations from the way they are looking at you. One such instance is being able to describe a situation without any prejudice or preconceptions. Another example is determining the central theme from the supporting ones in a piece of writing. Another instance is making a rough classification or preliminary system for arranging one’s research. Finally, explaining the significance of a sign, chart, or graph by restating it in your own words is another example.

Another approach discussed in the article is evaluation. To evaluate the validity of questions, descriptions, statements, or other forms of representation by determining the strength of the authentic or intended inductive relationships between them (Facione, 2011). This includes evaluating the veracity of assertions or other depictions which describe a person’s opinion, belief, judgment, situation, experience, or perception. The author uses several examples to illustrate this concept, including determining the reliability of sources of information, determining whether or not two claims are inconsistent with one another, determining whether or not two statements overrule one another, and determining whether or not the evidence available supports a particular conclusion.

Some of the examples proposed by the experts are as follows: determining whether or not a witness or jurisdiction is credible concerning a specific event or subject matter; determining whether or not the decision of reasoning follows with surety or a high confidence level of its premises; determining the rational strength of reasoning based on imagined situations; and determining whether or not the argument is meaningful, relevant, or has repercussions for a specific situation.

Another approach that the author discusses in the article is an explanation. According to experts, an explanation demonstrates one’s capacity to articulate one’s thinking and conclusions clearly and convincingly (Facione, 2011). This involves providing someone with a comprehensive overview, including a statement of your reasoning and an explanation of the background, criteria, methodology, concepts, and evidence that led you to reach your conclusions. An explanation is broken down into the subskills of describing techniques and results, legitimizing procedures, suggesting and attempting to defend one’s own conceptual and causal explanations of incidents or viewpoints, and conveying whole and quite well rebuttals in the context of pursuing the best comprehension possible.

In order to better explain results, one might, for instance, make a chart. Another is to document one’s present state of mind on a complicated and significant topic for future reference (Facione, 2011). One further illustration would be to describe the criteria and conditions used in the text’s context to determine the quality of the interpretation. Another example would be to provide study findings and elaborate on the procedures and criteria used to get those findings. Other examples include providing a list of considerations that went into determining a final grade and appealing to established criteria to demonstrate the soundness of a judgment. Another example is creating a graphical representation that faithfully depicts the hierarchical relationship between ideas.

The Most Appropriate Approach

Interpretation, in my view, is the most appropriate approach for engaging in critical thinking. In my opinion, this is the case since it improves both the consistency and the quality of the product.
