An Art Project for Mental Wellness

Introduction

Like other forms of psychology, art therapy seeks to help its clients work through personal issues and grow as individuals through the establishment and cultivation of a trusting therapeutic alliance, with the goals of facilitating the resolution of conflicts within and the heightening of self-awareness. One possible benefit of art therapy for those struggling with emotional or mental health issues is improved coping mechanisms. Types of art therapy are psychological approaches that use creative expression as a therapeutic or diagnostic tool(Motta, 2020). My art project includes several art treatments that, depending on the patient’s preferences, may be effective with little preparation and inexpensive materials.

Painting

Since painting includes blank canvases in which pictures are compared and manipulated, it may be used to help patients express their worry and terror via projection, which has been shown to considerably enhance their mental health in psychology. Patients may utilize fluid gestures to drop paint over a surface, which is therapeutic. Painting has psychological implications since it may be therapeutic and help you express emotions locked inside for a long time. Similarly, the emotional pain associated with suppressing sentiments may be alleviated via the therapeutic medium of painting. The connection between painting and psychology lies in the fact that both the artist and the viewer benefit from tapping into their subconscious by creating art.

Scribbling

As hasty, style-free writing, scribbling is seen to be an integral element of the human condition, one that emerges spontaneously as a kid explores and learns about the world around them. Scribbling is drawing random lines and shapes using a pen or pencil on a flat surface like paper. Since scribbling allows for greater flexibility and less pressure to produce an aesthetically beautiful work of art, it has therapeutic value in the field of psychology since it helps patients quiet their minds and reduce tension. As a kind of spontaneous sketching, scribbling may reflect a person’s mental state, with some shapes and lines indicating stress, others indicating calm, and others revealing a mind all over the place. Moreover, scribbling is employed for cognitive development in that it is a vital activity for young children since it allows them to communicate their complicated thoughts and sophisticated concepts.

Finger painting

Because it allows one to explore and express their creativity, finger-painting may be a great approach to creating rapport and connection with oneself and others while exploring emotions without resorting to words or language. Because it’s so easy: dip your fingers in some paint and use them to make whatever shapes and forms you choose on some paper, finger painting may profoundly affect one’s mental and spiritual health. In psychology, finger painting is a wonderful means of relieving tension. There is no limit to the expression of feelings in this activity because one only needs to dip their fingers in paint and then put all their feelings on a piece of paper, making it relevant to the fields of psychology. After all, using your fingers to create something new can be very uplifting emotionally and psychologically. In psychological terms, this is helpful since choosing colors that represent your feeling when painting unconsciously is common.

Collages

Collaging is the deliberate selection of preexisting photographs from a repository to convey a certain concept or evoke a particular emotional response. This makes the actual processes of constructing a collage seem easy. Collage-making is a psychologically validated method of self-expression, stress management, confidence building, and interpersonal skill development. Creating and engaging with collage art may have positive psychological and therapeutic effects. Consequently, it is useful in treating PTSD and helping a large population of elderly persons with memory problems. Depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma are among the psychological conditions that might benefit artistic expression.

Conclusion

Art therapy seeks to enhance a patient’s mental health by exploring connections between the individual’s creative processes and their inner world. Like other branches of psychology, art therapy is concerned with assisting clients in resolving internal conflicts. Art therapy’s beneficial effects make it relevant to cognitive psychology, among others. The point of my art project is for patients to collaborate with a psychologist to investigate their feelings and then utilize creative outlets like painting to come up with answers to their problems.
