The Mob Museum is located in Las Vegas, Nevada, and home to many historical stories. The museum focuses on the history of organized crime and law enforcement and its influence on American society. The virtual tour of the Mob Museum was insightful, allowing me to have an in-depth understanding of the history of organized crime and crime prevention. The guide on the museum begins in the lobby, the original federal courthouse and post office in Las Vegas, evidenced by the post office boxes on the wall (The Mob Museum, 2021). From the lobby, the tour guide takes us to line up, a poorly lit space featuring black and white pictures of historical personalities connected to organized crime. In the middle was a one-way glass exhibition. The lineup is where the stories of many mobsters started. In the 1800s, the lineups were utilized by police to identify criminal suspects with the help of the victims. I believe the lineup approach was practical in accurate suspect identification and prosecution.
The tour guide talks of the mobsters and how they made millions during prohibition. As they struggled to have the most successful rum-running and bootlegging rackets, violent turf wars emerged, as evidenced by the brown brick wall with bullet holes. This indicates that crime prevention has always been a challenge to the administration. The video also indicates the challenge of public perception of police on crime prevention. The public claimed that the assailants of the Valentine’s Day massacre had police uniforms, which shows that the police may have been involved in the massacre. The video highlights the significance of forensic science in conducting criminal investigations. The third video showcases the forensic lab, which has a glass wall with bullet samples, human bones, and a picture of a crime scene on the wall. Forensic science, including DNA profiling, fingerprint analysis, and bullet study, has played a significant role in criminal investigation for over a century (The Mob Museum, 2021). The second part of the virtual guide shows the progress of organized crime and how the judicial system responds to the growing worry. This is evidenced by the room with an American map on the wall, indicating how organized it spread across the entire country by 1950.
Over the last few decades, the national government has made significant efforts to combat organized crime. I believe this has been made possible by leveraging technological advancement in policing. Features such as wiretapping, cameras, and other devices (The Mob Museum, 2021). Approaches such as using informants and undercover agents have also helped the fight against organized crime. For instance, the tour guide showed a room with a glass cabinet with modern technology devices linked to Jack Garcia and a renounced undercover agent.
In conclusion, the Mob Museum tour offered insightful historical background and important insights into the intricate world of crime, even though it did not specifically target crime prevention. After having this virtual experience, I was made to think about the complex nature of crime prevention, which probably involves more than just locking up offenders. Addressing social and economic injustices, offering chances for training and work, and promoting a feeling of community and belonging may all be part of it. Maybe if we concentrate on these factors and provide a system of support that enables people to make wise decisions, we can all work together to create a safer future.
