To be someone who acts as a guide for patients as they navigate the healthcare system is, at its core, what it means to be a patient advocate. This role requires the nurse to have therapeutic interactions with patients as well as open lines of communication with them. Patients who take on the part of advocates for themselves serve the patient as an informant during the decision-making process while also standing by the patient and lending support as they make their own choice (Sibiya, 2018).
