When it comes to nursing practice, it’s imperative to continually analyze and ponder on one’s skills, values, and knowledge, more so in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code. As a healthcare expert with over 15 years of experience, I have had the honor to evolve and adapt, obtaining key lessons from my strengths and acknowledging my central learning needs. In this reflective course, I will survey my personal strengths and essential learning gaps recognized in my Scope of Practice Learning Contract (SLOC) (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). Besides, I will reflect on how these concepts link with the NMC Code and highlight my plan to manage my learning needs based on the available opportunities.

Strengths as they relate to safe and effective nursing practice

Adaptability and Active Listening

One of my core key strengths lies in my ability to adapt to the specific needs of each person under my care. Notably, the NMC Code of Conduct, especially standard 2, stresses the importance of listening to people and answering their concerns, and that is done based on their preferences. Having practiced in healthcare for over 15 years, I have the capacity to adapt to match each individual needs since I am a good listener. Paperwork plus Record Keeping: One of the central learning needs highlighted in my practice is associated with harmonizing all investigations and audits, especially when it comes to the up-to-date maintenance of training and audit records. While I am keen on finishing paperwork, it is a subject that I can tweak in terms of effectiveness (Hcpc, 2020). Finalizing paperwork usually takes longer than I would wish, and I recognize the need to improve my organizational skills in this area.

Balancing Personal Views with Professional Boundaries: equally important is my need to strike a balance between acting in the best interest of clients every moment while upholding professional boundaries. Sometimes, it becomes challenging for me to split my personal opinions from my professional responsibilities (Hcpc, 2020). Therefore, it is imperative for me to settle for the right balance, guaranteeing that my judgments stay objective and in line with the deserved patient interests.

Cooperation with investigations and audits: Another learning need revolves around cooperating with investigations and audits, which are fundamental for maintaining the quality and safety of healthcare services. In my role as a Team Leader, ensuring that training and audit records are consistently up to date is crucial. However, my aversion to paperwork has been a limitation in this aspect. Although I manage to complete the required documentation, it often takes more time than it should (Hcpc, 2020). This challenge is an opportunity for me to improve my efficiency and embrace the administrative aspects of my role, which are integral to safe and effective nursing practice.

Upholding the reputation of the profession: admittedly another learning need I have concerns while acting in the best interest of patients at all times. While it is essential to offer personal opinions, some cases call for additional handling techniques that may not be part of the profession. This means I have remained professional even in situations that push me to my limits. There may be times when I question a policy and procedure with a piece of paperwork that is put in place, but I have to remember the correct routes and go against what I see to be better judgment (Hcpc, 2020).

Reflecting on these learning needs brings to light the consequences that result from safe and effective practice and how they correspond with the NMC Protocol. Cooperating with investigations and audits directly ties to the theme of “Practicing Effectively.” Cataloging accurate records and confirming compliance with the outlined standards is fundamental for providing evidence-based services, which is outlined in Standard 5 of the Code. Furthermore, acting on time to record any errors or harm that happens aligns with Standard 7, insisting on the significance of reducing potential risks that may emerge from the nursing practice (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023).

Moving on to acting in the best interest of patients at all times, this learning need is associated with the themes of “Prioritizing People” and “Preserving Safety.” Whereas it can be problematic to balance personal sentiments with professional obligation, it is vital to remain candid and open concerning any blunders or harm that might happen. Notably, that aligns with Standard 7 (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). Moreover, raising issues in case a person is susceptible or at risk Standard 9 displays a duty and commitment to patient safety and protection.

Addressing Learning Needs through Available Opportunities

Acknowledging learning needs is just the beginning. The following vital phase is to handle such needs through using the presenting opportunities. Two key opportunities that align with the NMC Code come to the forefront.

Paperwork plus Record Keeping: as aforementioned, one of the central learning needs highlighted in my practice is associated with harmonizing all investigations and audits, especially when it comes to the up-to-date maintenance of training and audit records. Sorting this issue with the learning need to be linked to paperwork and record keeping, I will continuously pursue appropriate assistance from colleagues who have the skills to do so since one of my opportunities involve being able to delegate duties to other. The main issue will be to identify the person or people who are competitive enough to handle this issue (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). Additionally, I will seek training and workshops that focus on time management and efficient record-keeping practices.

Balancing Personal Views with Professional Boundaries: It is now clear that I have to strike a balance between acting in the best interest of clients every moment and upholding professional boundaries. Therefore, to enhance my capability to perform my duties in the best interest of patients while maintaining professional boundaries, I will engage in a procedural reflective practice utilizing Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle, which provides a structured method of experimental learning (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). This technique equips with the necessary basis to analyze situations in which personal views might interfere with professional judgment, hence leading to the development of strategies that will maintain objectivity.

Cooperation with investigations and audits: The opportunity herein revolves around linking this issue and concern to the NMC code. Being accountable for delegating tasks and duties to others that I may not be in a position to handle is fundamental for service provision. Delegation is an essential skill in nursing practice, and it’s not only about distributing tasks but matching them with individuals who exhibit strengths in the respective field. This aligns with “Promoting Professionalism and Trust” as it showcases cooperation and the sharing of skills and knowledge with colleagues (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). By maximizing this opportunity, I can improve my delegation skills and enhance efficiency in my role.

Upholding the reputation of the profession: The opportunity herein centers on being open and candid with service users about all aspects of care and treatment, including when mistakes or harm have occurred. It’s essential to show empathy and remorse when necessary, creating a safe and open environment for patients. This aligns with the theme of “Preserving Safety” and “Promoting Professionalism and Trust.” It demonstrates accountability for one’s actions (Standard 7) and upholds the reputation of the nursing profession (Standard 13) (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). Utilizing this opportunity will allow me to enhance my communication skills, particularly in sensitive situations.

Therefore, reflecting on my knowledge, skills, and values in relation to the NMC Code has been an insightful journey. Recognizing my strengths and learning needs is the first step toward professional growth. My ability to adapt, listen, and respect patients’ privacy aligns with the core principles of safe and effective nursing practice. Acknowledging my learning needs, such as cooperation with investigations and maintaining the best interest of patients, presents opportunities for improvement. These learning needs are not only vital for my personal development but also for upholding the standards outlined in the NMC Code. By embracing opportunities for delegation and open communication with service users, I aim to address these learning needs effectively (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2023). This not only enhances my practice but also contributes to the overarching goal of delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care. In the ever-evolving field of nursing, reflection, growth, and alignment with professional standards are indispensable.

In a nutshell, reflecting on the outcomes for safe and effective nursing practice whilst bearing in mind personal and professional values is essential. My two key strengths that are factors that contribute to safe and effective technique are my ability to adapt well to individual requirements and my devotion to valuing the privacy and confidentiality of clients. In addition, it’s imperative to handle personal learning needs as required. Acknowledging areas that need improvement, for instance, cooperating with investigations and audits and acting in the best interests of individuals, is a valued decision that fortifies personal and professional growth. Notably, carrying out reflection based on tools like Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle offers a structured tactic for learning through experiences to enhance healthcare practice, besides deepening one’s understanding of the sentiments and reactions in different contexts. Meaning that reflection supports the integration of personal and professional values into nursing practice, guaranteeing that patient care is secure, effective, and adheres to the NMC Code.
