Reflection on Personal Growth and the Professional Mission Statement

In any healthcare situation, it is the role of nursing staff to necessitate the abilities and expertise of the profession to thrive. Such skills are vital for personal growth and professional development. For this reason, I intend to work as a clinical nurse manager after attaining my degree from the program. In this role, as a nurse manager, I will be tasked with developing nursing plans and provision for quality medical care which is secure, affordable, and excellent, alongside coordinating the moral, regulatory, and financial aspects of nursing care and administration planning and management. I will focus on adopting regulatory measures to aid nursing practice, especially clauses 4 and 5.

The fourth clause mainly focuses on the powers vested in nurses, their responsibility, and integrity as it relates to the nursing profession regarding making informed decisions and right choices and behaving in a manner consistent with the need to offer practical and adequate patient-centered care. On the other hand, the fifth clause emphasizes the responsibility of nurses to demonstrate and uphold proficiency in their practice, personal and professional career advancement, and improvement, completeness, dignity, character maintenance, welfare, and wellness for themselves and the individuals they care for (American Nurses Association, 2015). This statement is justified since I intend to pursue a doctoral degree in nursing to prepare me to attain a leadership role in nursing.

I firmly believe that incorporating the four professional nursing qualities, which are outlined in the American (ANA) ethics standards, will provide the much-needed multidisciplinary approach, which would contribute to an accurate performance of the assigned tasks that align with the necessary standards associated with diagnostic and therapeutic standards of professional nursing conduct. According to American Nurses Association (2015), embracing ethical principles will promote interaction and coordination among care providers and patients, alongside adopting evidence-based approaches in the clinical setting. Also, the nursing course has allowed me to reshape my understanding, abilities, skills, and expertise as a professional nurse. These have highlighted the benefits of ongoing personal development and professional growth, which are helpful in nursing (Wojciechowski et al., 2016). Because of these, I prefer to collaborate and get committed and engaged in reflective practice, which is necessary for attaining long-term nursing goals.

Kurt Lewin’s change model suggests a three-stage paradigm of transformation that necessitates repudiation and substituting the previous information, an important concept that I apply in my professional nursing practice (Petiprin, 2020). The model deploys engagement among nurses and emphasizes modification of performance enhancement where nurse leaders try to promote decision-making. Further, the change model relies on naturalistic inquiry approaches where team members adopt the position of an educator to provide instructions to others (Wayne, 2021). The model has a significant implication for nursing practice as a profession.

To uphold ethical and moral standards in nursing practice, an example of a situation I witnessed was a terminally ill patient who demanded a last wish to see their wife before dying and requested that I pass the wrong information to the spouse. However, to behave ethically, I deployed the principle of autonomy and beneficence by respectfully informing the patient that I was not willing to pass the wrong information on to the spouse. However, I promised the client that I would not disclose the information about the wife. Nevertheless, the patient could send her spouse to see his mistress. I chose to behave that way since I wanted to respect the patient’s autonomy to decide. The following example involved a mother who wanted to genetically test her siblings for breast cancer. I used the same ethical principles to inform the client, noting that she was free to have the test due to a lack of prophylactic therapies for pediatric breast cancer patients. The project changed my vision on the approaches to apply to evolve personally and professionally since it offered me the necessary guidance on the nursing profession, which is vital to academic and professional advancement.
