Nutrition in Public Health

Introduction

This report aims to evaluate and understand the daily eating habits of people and how food affects our mental, physical, and emotional stability. It also will enable the reader to understand diet culture and how they can change their food behavior to lead a wholesome and happy life. Not only this, but this report also helps the reader to understand the psychological effects of nutrition on one’s daily life chores and how unhealthy eating habits could lead to sabotaging their life daily. Also, how to stop oneself from binge eating, prevent food poising and understand the concept of good and lousy nutrition briefly. Nutrition can be described as the daily fuel a human or an animal needs to survive. Nutrition comes from food, and food has millions of kinds of nutrition. The contents found in different types of food are vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and many more. Carbohydrates and fats are energy-providing foods but could also affect the metabolism of one’s body. Fats are the energy-providing contents in a portion of food. Still, they build harmful cholesterol in your arteries, which may sabotage the blood flow, eventually leading to multiple-organ failure or even direct heart failure that would cause the person’s death. The main components that lead to foodborne diseases are primarily bacteria, toxins, viruses, parasites, molds, contaminated food, etc (Ruiz-Capillas, C. and Herrero, A.M., 2019.).

Nutrition through the life course

The world’s continuous and rapidly changing habits require us to keep pace with the change at the same speed and change our bodies accordingly. These days when you open social media, you will find people divided into two groups, one that believes in taking healthy nutrition and exercising daily, and going to the gym to keep themselves fit to live a long healthy life, and the other who believes that the size of the body, or the type of food and contents you consume should not be the factor to run their lives. The obese group calls the people who have healthy habits ‘fatphobic,’ leading to big internet fights amongst those groups. But to live a healthy and happy life, everybody must balance their nutrition and exercise daily. Dealing with a population of 788.84 crore people is a tough job, especially when it is about providing them with food and the knowledge of what and what not a person should consume daily. Some materials can be extremely hazardous if taken daily. Foods like processed cheese, chips, or any cheese soda that is made up of high fructose corn syrup which is also knowns as sugar, which is proven to be highly unhealthy for the human body; it can make a person fat and lazy which would prevent them to exceeding or even moving their bodies which would eventually cause them serious health measure and in order death. The World Health Organization, also known as WHO, is responsible for teaching a world population of 788.84 crores about healthy and poisonous eating habits. The World Health Organization always stays at the top of its game. It always keeps amending policies and food information when presenting healthy food ideas. Chia seeds could also be considered the primary source of protein and nutrition for a person as they contain 30-34g of dietary fibre (Kulczyński, B., Kobus-Cisowska, J., Taczanowski, M., Kmiecik, D. and Gramza-Michałowska, A., 2019.)

Nutrition and chronic diseases

Nutrition is a crucial factor in maintaining a healthy body and staying alive; the pattern of food intake a person follows defines how their next 50 years of life will be. People that cut off carbs and fats from their diet prevent themselves from catching diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. The healthy food that goes into their bodies sits and decides how they will live the coming years of their life. To understand the perfect patterned diet for oneself, it is imperative to consult dieticians, as they are professionally trained in this field and would do specific amounts of tests to understand what and what not your body would need to survive healthily in this fast-food-stricken world. Processed food with all kinds of harmful components is called fast food because it is digested in the stomach quickly and makes the person hungry again. The fact that their digestion takes place in the stomach at a rapid speed makes them called as fast-foods. Professional and trained gym trainers always suggest their clients consume protein instead of fast food because the protein powder or foods stay in the stomach for a long time, help the metabolism stay balanced, and do not make the person hungry often. Choosing protein as your primary food intake is an intelligent decision because it would lead you to a long and healthy life. Fishes are considered a prosperous source of protein for humans (Sharif, M., Zafar, M.H., Aqib, A.I., Saeed, M., Farag, M.R., and Alagawany, M., 2021). Poor nutrition is crucial in catching chronic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and significant public health concerns. These diseases are 80% responsible for premature deaths since the forever generations. A diet plan high in carbohydrates, fats, sugars, and salt and contains minimal fiber, fruits, and vegetables increases the risk of developing harmful and killing diseases. In addition to a healthy and balanced diet, exercise, avoiding tobacco habits like smoking cigarettes, consuming chukkas, and limiting or even completely cutting out alcoholic consumption is essential for keeping horrible chronic diseases away. It is imperative to prioritize healthy habits and balanced diets to live a long, happy, healthy life. Consuming foods that contain high levels of carbohydrates, fats, and sugars, like pizzas, ice creams, noodles, pasta portions, etc., is extremely dangerous for the public and their health. One should always make the right decision when it comes to health.

Food wars – The economics and politics of food

As we talk about nutrition and its source and necessity for life, it is equally essential to discuss the economic and political factors regarding food. The food, the nourishment we debate upon and consume, does not appear magically; there are multiple economic, political, geographical, and financial factors by which the food on a plate reaches someone. Different countries produce different kinds of food, diverse cuisine, and other baits. The main difference in the food distribution process and factors that food distributions rely on are the production, management, caretaking, trading, and supplying of the food. There can be multiple levels of multifaceted barriers when it comes to food supply; the corrupted people sitting in the superior positions of the food supply chains could commit corruption in the distribution of the food by keeping the majority of the products for them without keeping any legal track of that. The other economic factor that the food chain of any country depends on is the county’s financial state. Many countries like Merica, India, UK are significant producers of food and produce many types of food that contain rich amounts of protein and fibers. Still, on the other hand, countries like Pakistan, Africa, are poor economically and fail to produce food not even enough to feed their population. Politics reared food has now even touched social media; apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook have millions of users that are divided into two groups of people, one that believes in the intake of healthy food and exercising and the other that does not believe in intaking of healthy food and exercising. The second category of people is introduced to the world with a phrase called ‘Body Positivity,’ in which unhealthy body forms such as obesity are promoted; obesity happens when a person has been taking care of themselves for a long time and they just started getting fatter and fatter by storing unhealthy food and never exercising. People who claim that even obesity is a healthy body type are called the first category of people that believe in eating a healthy balanced diet and exceeding regularly ‘fatphobic’ because the first category bullies and talks ill about the people who believe in body positivity.

Evaluating dietary behaviors

Understanding food behaviors and their impacts on our bodies is called evaluating dietary behaviors. People with emotional and mental weaknesses need a nutritional plan for their well-being or severe mental illness (SMI) who die 15 years earlier than their approximate living years. This is because of their choices in their early days regarding their food intake and dietary habits. Although, some people struggle with food-related diseases like obesity and other cardiovascular diseases, which eventually cause depression and anxiety. Doctors provide them with anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pills to calm them down because conditions like these affect the person’s mental health horrendously. The lifestyle and food intake habits a person decides to follow stand out to be the sole of what they go through after some years. (Teasdale, S.B., Ward, P.B., Samaras, K., Firth, J., Stubbs, B., Tripodi, E. and Burrows, T.L., 2019.). Factors like proportion control, nutrient intake, balanced diet, food choices, and frequency of meals and snacks determine a perfect balanced dietary chart for a person. Meat is considered the richest source of protein, but not everybody eats meat, or there is vegans option for them too, like, cheese, tofu, sprouts, etc. (Leroy, F., Smith, N.W., Adesogan, A.T., Beal, T., Iannotti, L., Moughan, P.J. and Mann, N., 2023.).

Psychological Perspectives on Food

The type and amount of food we intake daily remarkably affects our mental well-being, as the food works as fuel for the body and is the exact thing that keeps us going all day. From the psychological perspective, food provides nutrition for our body and plays a far beyond significant role in our lives. For example, suppose a person eats healthy food in a controlled portion manner. In that case, the phenomenon called bloating that happens after having a meal takes place in a lower proportion, which makes them confident by recognizing they did a good thing for their body and to stay healthy, but when a person eats junk or fast food like pizza, burger, ice cream, lots food that has lots of processed food components in it, the bloating takes place in a more significant amount. The person starts seeing themselves as a failure who cannot take care of themselves, not only by the bloating process but when the fast food makes its way to arteries, it stores fat in areas where the blood travelers to the heart and blocks its way which leads to the stopping of blood supply to the heart and then to the brain which ultimately to death. Food can also have an impact on our emotions. For example, when we are stressed, we might decide to eat ice cream or pizza, or other junk food like that to comfort our anxiety, the fast-foods reassure our nervous system down because, first of all, it gives us the satisfaction of having control over our own lives, second, these kinds of foods trigger the release of feel-good chemicals in our brains, such as dopamine and serotonin. Food affects our social connection often, sharing food with our friends and families also affects our emotions with others and strengthens our bonds with people like friends and families. The different kinds of foods are always made only occasionally because they are marked extremely special to be made every day feel about our bodies also depends on the food we eat. Different cultures have different kinds of food; for example, in India, we make laddoo on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, Kheer on the occasion of Diwali, and Gujiya on the experience of Teej. We invite people from our neighborhood and families to attend the cultural celebration, which helps strengthen the social connection and having fun.

Ethical Issues in Public Health and Nutrition

This means that the measures that the ruling government of any country takes to provide their citizens with the perfect guidance towards food and healthy intake habits. These are some of the steps included in that process, and equity means making people aware of the terms and conditions that might be related to the food intake pattern they decide to adopt. Privacy means that a person has the full right not to disclose their dietary habits and can legally sue anyone who practices or tries to trespass their authority to get knowledge of that. Autonomy means that the public has the full right to decide their nutrition plans themselves without the interference of others. This ethical initiative gives people the advantage of enjoying the freedom to choose their meal plan. Saget is also a significant factor when choosing a diet plan or even a single food item. The world’s population is doubling daily, and the amount of meat production also needs to be doubled to maintain the pace (Lee, H.J., Yong, H.I., Kim, M., Choi, Y.S. and Jo, C., 2020). This type of ethical initiative ensures to educate people about the healthy food types and the others that are poisonous to us. Cultural sensibility plays a significant role when taled about ethical initiatives. Different cultures have different food habits and arrangements. Each of us needs to respect other cultures and their food habits.

Food Hygiene and the airline industry

Food hygiene is the most crucial factor when it comes to consumption and making a dietary habit related to nutrition. One might call the healthy kinds of food, but if the food components turn out to be unhygienic, then the total efforts of preparing a diet chart and following it accordingly go to waste. Cell time of bacteria passes rapidly as their cell masses multiply quickly within 20 min to 120 min (Sharif, M., Zafar, M.H., Aqib, A.I., Saeed, M., Farag, M.R. and Alagawany, M., 2021.) Like we want to stay safe and clean from the outside, exactly how our bodies like to stay safe, healthy, and clean from the inside, we could sabotage this by consuming dirty and unhygienic food. Some of the big food industries” soften lack in take care of the food they produce from scratch and make it poisonous, and those toxic and unsanitary products eventually get distributed in the market and kill many people. Some steps that can be followed to keep food safe and hygienic are temperature control. Different food demand different levels of temperature to sustain in nature, for example, food made from whole grain materials require cold places to be stored, which would prevent them from rotting and getting poisonous, whereas food like milk need to boil often, which would stop the milk from going pale and eventually rotting (Grispoldi, L., Karama, M., Armani, A., Hadjicharalambous, C., and Cenci-Goga, B.T., 2021.). When seeing at the airline industry, the rules and regulations for maintaining food safety and hygiene are stringent. Food safety training is the process in which all airline food service staff must undergo food safety training to ensure that they understand the proper procedures for handling and preparing food safely and hygienically. The cleaning and sanitation process involves airline food service areas, and equipment must be cleaned and sanitized regularly to prevent the growth and spread of bacteria. This includes everything from the preparation areas to the utensils and equipment used to serve food.

Personal hygiene and environmental swabs

When it comes to consuming food and dealing with healthy food habits, the first factor that pops up in our minds is hygiene, that is, is the food that we are going to eat is clean or not. The producers of the food that make food from scratch from the food components the earth and nature provide us ensure industrial and production hygiene; as food consumers, we need to maintain our hygiene so that the food does not harm us. For example, we could always wash our hands before eating to keep some individual hygiene steps. We work all day, go to different places, hold different, and use our hands to do other things, which leads us to collect different kinds of germs and bacteria on our hands, which, if consumed, could cause severe health damage and even death. Next, we should always sit and eat at a clean and tiny place like a dining room or a living room, not places like rooftops, the roadside, or other open positions. Eating in available positions causes the bacteria and germs floating in the atmosphere to stick or enter our food, making it poisonous. Dehydration harms the human body (Gómez, I., Janardhanan, R., Ibañez, F.C. and Beriain, M.J., 2020.) The food industry experts always suggest people avoid street foods like Panupuri, vada paw, falafels, etc., for the abovementioned reasons. For example, once a news flash was going on the news channel that somewhere in India, a panipuri vendor used the same cup to serve people water as he used to pee in. That awful news made plenty of people realize that avoiding street food is the best health care. In the concept of personal hygiene regarding food, keeping the eating area clean is imperative to prevent the spread of pathogens from the environment into the food. Even after doing all this, we cannot be sure our food is 100% clean. That is where we need an environmental swab. The environmental swab detects germs and bacteria in the food served. Swabs are taken from surfaces such as floors, walls, equipment, and utensils and tested for microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This information helps identify potential contamination sources and develop appropriate control measures to prevent the spread of pathogens.

Chemicals, food poisoning, and disinfectants

In today’s world, where junk and fast food are way too famous and loved by people, whereas the healthy and nutritious are stuck inside the wardrobe, it is the same place where dangerous intensity and levels of food poisoning occur. Foodborne problems and chronic diseases have almost attacked 90% of the world’s population and are increasing daily (Zeaki, N., Kohler, S., Skandamis, P.N. and Schelin, J., 2019). For example, In 2010, 600 million foodborne diseases were reported that took many lives. Then again 550 million happened due to the common pathogen bacteria called Campylobacter spp., Vibrio cholerae, Shigella spp., enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Al-Ghazali, M., Al-Bulushi, I., Al-Subhi, L., Rahman, M.S. and Al-Rawahi, A., 2020.) Food poisoning could happen due to many reasons like

Conclusion

This report concludes that people should deal with their choices and look closely at their habits that could decide the next 15 years of their lives. They shoultheays ensure that the food they are about to consume is perfectly healthy and does not contain harmful components. Food containing carbohydrates, fats, and sugar could encontains containing the consumer as they restrict the blood flow through the arteries to the person’s brain, leading to death. Understanding food behaviors and their impacts on our bodies is called evaluating dietary behaviors. People with emotional and mental weaknesses need a nutritional plan for their well-being or severe mental illness (SMI) who die 15 years earlier than their approximate living years. The type and amount of food we intake daily remarkably affects our mental health. Daily food works as fuel for well-being and is the exact thing that keeps us going all day. From the psychological perspective, food provides nutrition for our body and plays a far beyond significant role in our lives. Overall, one should always take care of themselves and the people around them regarding dietary habits.
