Mental Health Stigma

The community often rejects people with mental illness. This occurs as a result of stigma. People with mental illness may be treated differently, made to feel ashamed, and viewed negatively. Therefore, people have mental health stigma and discriminatory attitudes about mental illness. Behind the videos ‘ Right to fail’ and ‘Hearing voices’ is the journey of people living with mental illness.

Behind ‘Right to fail’ is the exploration of apartments where people with mental illness live. The state of the apartment made me to surprise. Apartments are isolated from towns, and they are far away from other people (Frontline, 2019). The videos made e feel sympathetic to people with mental illness since they are left to determine their own lives. Therefore, the video raises moral questions about the policies of letting them on their own.

Autonomy is the ability of a person to act on his or her values, beliefs, and interest. Autonomy can be viewed as self-governance or self-legislation. Psychologically, autonomy is made up of attitudes and skills. Skills in this context are the person’s ability to relate with others. For example, a group formed a movement fighting against the stigma against those who hear voices. Hearing voices often react to life situations (NBC News, 2018). Thus, the hearing voice does not affect autonomy. Hearing voices does not cause distress, and people who hear voices can relate to others.

In order to perform, an autonomous person must have a sense of self-respect and self-worth. Also, knowledge is essential to understand what is best for her or him. Some circumstances help people to be autonomous or undermine autonomy. Developing skills and attitudes needs an individual to consider alternatives opportunity; people often appreciate and learn about themselves through others. Jeannie Bass is an autonomous person. Bass can determine her experience with the diagnosis of mental illness (NBC News, 2018). Additionally, Bass believes that her growth resulted from meeting others with the same condition as hers. Therefore, Bass can determine what is best for her and relate with others, making her an autonomous person.

Having freedom means taking a chance and actively experiencing what failed. Everyone has the Right to fail, and anyone can fail. Regarding people with severe mental illness, the Right to fail will hinder the treatment process. Reduction in the accountability of family members will negatively impact the lives of people with severe mental illness. Allowing people with mental illness to live independently will lead to hunger and confusion; thus, they will need more support(Frontline, 2019). When people with severe mental illness are granted the Right to fail, it will lead to poor outcomes. Therefore, the Right to fail should be limited since others become harmful to themselves.

People living with mental illness should remain in an adult home. Adult’s home provides a high-quality standard of living to people with mental illness. Living with meta illness is a challenge in balancing the everyday live routines, which will inconvenience. While in adult homes, interaction with others will enhance her life, so it is critical for people with mental illness to remain in adult homes. Additionally, some adult homes have a well-structured engaging activity that aims to stimulate the moods of people living with mental illness while they are closely monitored. Therefore, an adult’s home is a safe heaven for people living with mental illness.

As mentioned above, mental illness stigma is discrimination by society. The videos right fail and hearing voices draws the journey of people living with mental illness. In right fail, the isolated apartments for people with mental illness is a surprise. Hearing voices does not reduce the ability of a person to act according to his attitude. Therefore, to foster the well being of those living with mental illness, they should remain in adults homes.
