Managerial leadership is a way of acting and a crucial skill supporting organizational creativity. Leadership is defined as the capacity to detect and shape organizational culture and impact activity goals and approaches, dedication, and adherence in carrying out tasks (Yukl, 1989). Theories of leadership explain how and why specific individuals become leaders. They include; trait theory of leadership, behavioural theory of leadership, Contingency theory of leadership, Transformational Leadership Theory, Transactional Leadership Theory and Situational Leadership Theory.

Trait theory of leadership

The trait theory postulates that most leaders, as opposed to those not born with these inherent leadership attributes, are born with the characteristics that make them ideal for leadership (Bahirat, 2021). The characteristic leadership theory identifies obligations, intellect, transparency, and inventiveness. An individual can flourish in leadership by having these traits. The major problem with this hypothesis is that it needs to provide a comprehensive list of characteristics considered leadership qualities. However, it highlights the importance of characteristics that the specific study supports and aids in your improvement as a leader.

The behavioural theory of Leadership

According to behavioural theory, the focus is on the leaders’ behaviours and deeds rather than their characteristics or features. It believes developing various abilities or collecting skills over time leads to good leadership. A person can develop their leadership skills (Bahirat, 2021). The behaviours of a leader are extensively emphasized in behavioural theories of leadership; this theory contends that observing a leader’s behaviours is the best indicator of how successful their leadership will be.

Contingency theory of leadership

The contingency theory of leadership focuses on the leader’s context. It promotes the premise that many leadership philosophies have value based on the circumstance (YDEW, 2004). According to this perspective, influential leaders can modify their leadership style according to the circumstances. It also implies that selecting the ideal leader for a given circumstance might be the most significant action. Within this theory, it is also thought that the achievement of a leader in one kind of organization does not necessarily translate into success in another kind of organization.

Transformational Leadership Theory

The transformational leadership theory’s relationship between the leader and followers is a significant focus. It describes the kind of motivating leader they should have and exhorts followers to do their jobs more effectively. They inspire followers to do better and have a magnetic personality. Significant self-confidence, a dominating personality, and the imposition of one’s convictions are characteristics of charismatic managers (Macarie, 2007).

Transactional Leadership Theory

Transactional theories, also referred to as management theories or exchange theories of leadership, primarily focus on organization, cooperation, and monitoring. According to this notion, rewards and penalties form the foundation of leadership. In order to encourage staff to perform better, it is frequently utilized in organizations and awards are offered to them (Bahirat, 2021). Transaction incentives and punishments are applied based on the assumption that people primarily perform actions to receive a reward.

Situational Leadership Theory

This theoretical framework strongly emphasizes the importance of situational aspects and factors. It does not consider any particular leadership style to be better than another (Bahirat, 2021). The situational leadership theory states that different management and decision-making ideologies are necessary in different situations. A leader should be capable of making choices depending on their evaluation of the situation.

Organizational managerial Leadership and Decision making

Both managers and leaders must be conversant with the best practices for exercising sound judgment in their respective firms (Ejimabo, 2015). The leaders should utilize the managerial leadership perspective while making decisions for the company. Any organization’s success is based on the choices its management team make. Therefore, wise choices contribute to the overall effectiveness of the company’s activities.

The management of excellence through leadership

According to this perspective, leadership is outstanding management, and the emphasis is on organizational excellence. The purpose of managerial leadership competency is to raise productivity, enhance productivity and efficiency, and inspire pride in one’s job among employees (Gagnon, 2012). In this position, leaders do not seek out and fix mistakes; instead, they assist others in doing their jobs properly. Excellence is all about change—change in the manager, the subordinates, and the company.

Emotional intelligence and leadership

Emotional intelligence refers to the power that an individual has over their own emotions and the capability to interpret and understand them and those of others (Ivanova, 2016). Emotional intelligence and integrity enable leaders and managers to maintain interrelations with employees and customers. The leader can deal with the stress and emotional attributes of the workplace. The ability to deal with emotions leads to improved work productivity in the workplace.

Conclusion

The perspective of management and leadership inside an organization significantly impacts how successful it becomes. Critical perspectives in management and leadership can be linked to the demands made on managers and the leadership styles that managers and leaders use when handling the organization. The perspective of management and leadership is substantially influenced by the need to keep up with changing technology, consumer demands, employee needs, and societal standards. Keeping management and leadership more unified so workers can get involved in decision-making.
