Invictus Movie Review

Problem Solving How can we identify current problems?

Invictus is one of my favorite films, and I love watching it any time as it is based on the book ‘’ Playing the Enemy’’ by John Carlin and narrates the encouraging, accurate tale of how Nelson Mandela used the 1995 Rugby World Cup to bring together the disunified post-racial South Africa. The movie takes place in South Africa in Cape Town and Johannesburg cities and was released on December 11, 2009. It was named Invictus, which means unconquered in English. The film starts with a rugby game being played and a fleet of cars passing by; then, the black children on the side of the road repeatedly chant to Nelson Mandela. The movie continues with a video of Nelson Mandela (acted by Morgan Freeman) released from prison after imprisonment for twenty-seven years in 1990 and his consequential appointment as the first black South African president. Mandela’s appointment created deep-rooted racial pressure and partitioning. Nelson Mandela was then inducted as the president, which records the memorable moment South Africa started its expedition towards solidarity and reunion.

The film continues with Mandela facing significant provocations from ruling an apportioned nation in his early days in office. Mandela then got information about an upcoming Rugby World Cup, which was to be hosted in South Africa, and for him, that was a chance to promote unity, which was his main agenda. Nelson then meets the Springboks South Africa rugby team captain, Francois ( acted by Matt Damon), and he inspires him to encourage the team to bring the victory home. Pienaar takes the encouragement, which drives him to boost his determination to train the team. As the Rugby World Cup was nearing, Springboks got a tough rivalry, but Nelson continued to connect the races to get enough support from the whole nation for the team. The final match between South Africa and New Zealand significantly influenced South Africa’s future.

Springbok Win brings individuals from all races together, which was Nelson’s primary goal, which was a heirloom that has lived to be celebrated. The film ends with Mandela and Pienaar sharing a moment of apprehension and awe. The film uses a soundtrack to give the film ambiance and narration, and Morgan Freeman’s acting gives a significant picture of Mandela’s determination; his acting made the film stand out. The film analyzed a critical moment in the history of South Africa when races were divided and Mandela’s ruling and agenda to unite the nation played out. Rugby sport is used as a unifying factor and represents the nation’s healing process of South Africa. Clint Eastwood’s direction and Tom Sterns’s film give the film an emotionally deep visual as the beauty of South Africa is captured. However, the film gives a predictable sports drama with the non-south African actors using the South African accent, which is not one hundred percent authentic. Mandela (acted by Morgan Freeman) is the leading actor, while people like Pirnaar ( acted by Matt Damon) could have been given more scenes.

How can we identify current problems as seen from Invictus?

To recognize a problem, we ought to have leaders ready to play a significant role in solving problems by having objectives and giving direction and motivation, as Nelson did in the film. Also, seeking a common objective as a community can make us able to give solutions, as the film shows how the unity of the races led to the unity of the nation. Moreover, having priorities, patience, and persistence will help us achieve our goals, as seen in the film how Mandela set his goal and had patience and time while executing his objective. Additionally, having common objectives will unite people, which is crucial in problem-solving, as seen in the film, where rugby was used as a uniting factor. Communicating while executing our goals will help us identify the main problem and solution, as seen in the film. In addition, flexibility in solution finding is crucial as it allows exploration of various approaches, as seen in the film how Mandela modified his plans. Lastly, as individuals, we should be accountable for our actions, as Mandela influenced individuals to be responsible for their operations.
