Reasons for Pursuing this Career
My journey to special education as a career is driven by a deep belief in ensuring that students at all levels are given a chance to be in an environment that is not discriminatory and where everyone feels valued and supported. I truly understand the difficulties and achievements of these extraordinary individuals, which has helped me realize that it is my mission to give all students a chance to achieve the same success as their colleagues. It is a career that is more of a vocation as it is a commitment to tearing down barriers, fighting for equity in education, and empowering students with diverse academic needs. I aim to be the stimuli for the transformation, designing a classroom where every child will find their strength and determine their potential.
Academic Goals and Steps
The first stop in my academic journey to becoming a Special Education Teacher is CRC, through which I have registered for courses such as Education and Department of Psychology and Special Education Fundamentals. The subjects are priceless for comprehending all students, their special tribulations, and effective pedagogical avenues in special education settings. Upon graduating with an associate degree, I will transfer to a university to study my chosen Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, this is crucial for acquiring the in-depth theoretical and practical skills. I will obtain state certification after passing exams that test my understanding and special education expertise. I am also planning to undertake a Master’s degree program in Special Education to broaden my area of cognizance and improve my capacity to assist students with different disabilities. The MAT degree would increase my knowledge of the field and qualify me for future management positions. I aim to secure internships and volunteer services to get some hands-on experience and develop a solid expertise on the issues of special education.
Prospects, Salary, and Perks
The sector of education appreciates the practical value of specialized skills. The median annual wage of Special Education Teachers is $62,950 as of May 2022 (BLS para.1). The job growth is expected to remain stagnant, but there is a wide fluctuation range for this decade. However, this may be attributed to the vacancies of retired employees and the constant demand for special education services. The market is the highest where there is a need for more teachers in urban and rural areas.
