Essay on Cultural Awareness

Non-verbal communication is crucial in human communication, and understanding various nonverbal communication cues can enable people to communicate effectively with each other. People must try to understand what others mean when they use various communication expressions without using words. Nonverbal communication cues include gestures, body movement, facial expressions, body language and eye contact. These can be used to express people’s feelings, emotions and even intentions. Understanding non-verbal communication and applying it appropriately is crucial because various expressions may seem similar but mean different things to different people. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of various non-verbal communication tools, including Proxemics, Kinesics and Haptics with the main intention of getting an insight into cultural awareness.

Proxemics involves studying how people use space to communicate, and it is crucial when dealing with people who originate from different cultures (the University Of Minnesota, 7-9). It also includes the distance between people when communicating, the direction of their gaze and the space occupied by them. People from various cultures hold various ideas concerning the appropriate amount of appropriate space and the importance of maintaining eye contact. It is important for people to understand the various differences as they communicate so they can communicate effectively. There are four types of proxemics as coined by Edward Hall, which include intimate space, social space, personal space and public space. Intimate space ranges from having physical body contact to 18 inches between two people communicating. This distance indicates that someone is communicating with a close family member or a close friend or lover. This is used in intimate relationships when lovers stand close to each other in mutual attraction. It is also used in interrogations because a smaller distance triggers adrenaline and increases pressure making a person confess. It is also applied in Sports whereby teammates pat each other’s back, head or torso and shows congeniality. Team members are likely to maintain a closer distance than any other friends. In some cases, overcrowding makes people anxious because they may want to avoid strangers stepping into their personal space. Personal distance is the distance that most people are comfortable with when talking to someone they are familiar with. Social-consultative distance is reserved for less familiar interactions, and public distance is the greatest distance between two people and is typically used in large groups of people, such as in a lecture hall.

Kinesics is the use of body language, including gestures, facial expressions and posture. The various body language signs can express feelings, emotions and intentions without using words (University Of Minnesota, 5). People of various cultures use various body language to mean various things, and it is crucial to understand them for people to interact effectively with others from different cultures. For instance, the “thumbs up” gesture, seen as a positive symbol in the United States, may be seen as an insult in certain Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures. Similarly, the “OK” gesture, seen as a positive symbol in the United States, may be seen as an insult in certain Latin American cultures. This indicates that no single set of non-verbal communication signals is universally accepted and understood (Tidwell 1-5).

Haptics refers to the study of how people use touch in communication (Maricopa Community college, 1-6). This includes hugging, patting and handshaking. Various cultures have differences concerning which touches are appropriate and which are not. What is acceptable in one culture may be unacceptable in another culture because it may mean something different. Although a handshake is widely accepted as a form of greeting, people have to vary the firmness depending on the location. In the western culture, firmness indicates that a person is confident or authoritative, while in the far east, the same can be translated to mean that someone is being aggressive. A quick and firm handshake in Northern Europe is considered good, while in Southern Europe and South America, a longer handshake with the left hand placed over the clasped right hand or elbow is considered warm. In Turkey, a firm handshake is considered aggressive, while a limp handshake is considered the standard in Africa. Muslim men in Islamic states do not shake hands with women outside their families (Tidwell 1-5).

In determining the various nonverbal cues used, 20 multicultural subjects were observed in a train station in an attempt to determine the frequency of nonverbal language tools. The differences in the use of nonverbal behaviours by men and women and across cultures were examined by the use of the test of Nonverbal cue knowledge. The test is meant to measure the knowledge of subjects on the meaning of nonverbal cues.

The study determined that various people have differences in their use of nonverbal communication. For instance, people from various cultures use various nonverbal communication tools when speaking, including gestures. It shows that people are aware of various non-verbal communication cues and use them for various purposes. According to research, women are more likely to use nonverbal communication than men. Women use subtle facial expressions and gestures to express their emotions. They are also more likely to use body language and maintain eye contact during communication. Women are also very likely to talk to each other closer than men (the University Of Minnesota, 5-13). They are also more likely to recognize any nonverbal communication than men. This is according to a study that revealed that women are more likely to use and understand more nonverbal communication cues because they are trained to do so even from a tender age. However, Men are less likely to use nonverbal communication. Men mostly use nonverbal communication to show that they are in control over a situation. Men are more likely to use physical body contacts like handshakes and hugs to show that they are in agreement or show respect. They are also more likely to use direct eye contact to express their dominance or even display their aggression. Nonverbal communication is not limited to women and women but means various things to people from different cultures. For instance, nodding may mean yes in some cultures, while in others, it may mean no (PointPark University, 1-5). A smile may show that a person is happy in one culture but mean that a person is being aggressive or disrespectful in a different culture. This may depend on the triggers associated with the smile.

However, some gestures are universally accepted and recognized. Among such gestures is the open hand, which shows that a person wants to be given something, while the eye flash shows that a person has recognized another person. Although nonverbal communication may not be universal, this shows that some of the gestures may extend and be recognized more widely than others.

People need to be aware of cultural differences in terms of nonverbal communication for several reasons. First, different cultures have different expectations for physical distance. For example, it is considered rude in some cultures to stand too close to someone when talking. Understanding these cultural expectations can help ensure that we do not offend someone with our physical proximity. Second, different cultures also have different expectations for body language. In some cultures, it is common to make direct eye contact with someone when speaking, while in other cultures, it is considered disrespectful. Understanding these cultural expectations can help better communicate with people from different backgrounds. Different cultures also have different expectations for touch. In some cultures, it is common to give hugs, while in other cultures, it is considered inappropriate. Understanding these cultural expectations can help us maintain appropriate boundaries when interacting with people from different backgrounds (the University Of Minnesota, 1-5). Finally, cultural awareness can help people better understand how people from different backgrounds communicate. By understanding the various forms of nonverbal communication that are used in different cultures, they can become better communicators and better understand how people from different backgrounds communicate.

Differences in nonverbal communication exist because of several factors, including cultural background, age, social context and gender. Cultural background is a major factor in explaining why differences in nonverbal communication exist. Different cultures have different ways of communicating nonverbally, and these differences can significantly impact how people interact. For example, in some cultures, eye contact is seen as a sign of respect, while in others, it is seen as a sign of disrespect. In addition, gestures and body language can mean different things in different parts of the world. For instance, while a thumbs-up sign in the United States means “good job” or “all is well,” it may be considered offensive in some countries (Tidwell 1-5). Age is another factor that can explain why differences in nonverbal communication exist. Children and adolescents are still learning how to communicate effectively and may need to be more aware of the nuances of nonverbal communication as adults. In addition, older adults may have difficulty understanding nonverbal cues due to physical or mental impairments. Gender is another factor that can explain why differences in nonverbal communication exist. Studies have shown that men and women tend to communicate differently. Women tend to be more expressive, using more nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, and body language to convey their meaning. Men, on the other hand, tend to be less expressive, relying more on verbal communication. Social context is another factor explaining why differences in nonverbal communication exist. Different social contexts can lead to different interpretations of nonverbal cues. For example, a person may smile in a friendly way in one context, but in another context, the same person might be frowning in anger. In addition, the same nonverbal cues can mean different things in different social contexts. For instance, a person may nod their head to show agreement in one context, but in another context, another person may nod to indicate disagreement.

In conclusion, cultural awareness can help people better understand and interpret other cultures’ non-verbal communication signals. This can prevent misunderstandings and encourage tolerance between different cultures. The research suggests that it is important to be aware of cultural differences when communicating with others. While some non-verbal communication signals may be considered universal, many of them can be interpreted differently in different cultures. Therefore, understanding different cultures can prevent misunderstandings and encourage tolerance.
