Critical Reflection: Music

A successful music artist requires excellent strategic planning due to the fast evolution in the modern world with new inventions every day, including high technology, internet and social media, and globalisation (Lesota et al., 2022). The music industry involves building a brand that will be unique, attractive, trusted, reputable, and entertaining, to gain a competitive advantage in the highly flooded industry. One must create a strong persona and identity and promote their brand in various ways to gain a bigger loyal market share. Music is essential in people’s social, political, emotional, and physical lives as they link specific events, feelings, and memories with songs (Lesota et al., 2022). Musical identity is significant for all artists, as it allows one to uniquely brand their art, whether social, political, religious, emotional or any combination. Persona describes how the artist presents themselves to the audience, including their grooming, posture, and physical expressions. This essay briefly reflects on building the persona and identity and promoting the brand as a music artist.

First, I must develop my skills and create appealing music to attract more people. Skills are a person’s stronghold as they help define one’s brand and create a strong market presence, as the audience likes polished work (Gorbunova, 2018). I will continue daily practice in the studio with the help of a music advisor to elevate my vocals, instrument use, and general presentations. These will enable me to identify my strengths, mistakes, and shortcomings and improve to become a better artist. Also, modern music involves recordings and multiple instruments necessary for producing finetuned music (Gorbunova, 2018). Therefore, besides developing personal skills, I will need to invest in high-quality resources like good instruments, microphones, cameras, and editing software. These will enable me to record music with quality sound and high-resolution, well-edited videos for physical attraction. Good skills and quality will help produce high-quality music that will likely attract more people.

After developing excellent musical skills, it will be essential to create a personal image. A brand allows people to identify one in a specific way and is essential for building a music career (Cheung, Pires, and Rosenberger, 2019). It distinguishes one from the crowd, so fans can easily identify you or your work at a glimpse. The first step to establishing a personal image is creating a brand logo. The logo should be simple, unique, and communicate your brand’s signature. A brand signature may entail a slogan, mission, or vision, that people will easily interpret (Cheung, Pires, and Rosenberger, 2019). I will need to hire a professional logo designer for well-polished work. Also, I will need to show up as an artist in my presence and aesthetics. This includes being keen on my grooming during a performance and overall life. People tend to identify more with me if I am well-groomed and fashionable. Thus, I will need a personal fashion designer to ensure I have the right outfit, hairstyle, and make-up. I will also need to create a good presence by showing up at events and making regular videos, photos, and audio for social media, hence the need for a private videographer.

Moreover, success in the music industry is defined by the audience that one can have (Jacobson, Gruzd, and Hernández-García, 2020). I will need to attain and retain a large audience for my music. I intend to create a stronger presence among the young generation as they are more likely to identify with my music style and content. Also, I envision establishing a globally recognised brand, which will require relevant marketing strategies. Therefore, I will create a YouTube channel where I will post regular videos of my music for people in all geographical areas to see. Also, I will market my brand on other social media platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where I will regularly post short clips of my videos and provide a link to direct mostly young viewers to my YouTube channel (Jacobson, Gruzd, and Hernández-García, 2020). I will also attend various youth events as per my ability to create a good relationship with other artists and the audience.

Finally, it is significant to consider the industry competition to develop effective strategies that will yield a competitive advantage. I will be keen to understand what the audience wants, what they like about more influential artists in my area of specialisation and their dislikes of less competitive ones. This will help me avoid making similar mistakes and guide me on the best practices to adopt. Also, I will seek collaborations with other music artists with similar goals and more influence. Collaborations are a great way of promotion as they allow the partner’s audience to identify and like your brand (Castañer and Oliveira, 2020). Therefore, collaboration for live performances, online creations, or other avenues will be highly considered.

Conclusively, I will require various skills and resources to develop a strong presence, persona, and identity for my music brand. I will need to practice my vocals and presentation more and invest in quality instruments and gadgets for fine productions. I will also need to take care of my image by creating a logo and hiring a fashion designer and a videographer for my photoshoots and online videos. I will attend events with the right costumes and target more young people from the global population. A strong presence on YouTube and other social media platforms will enable me to reach people worldwide. Finally, I will collaborate with various artists to promote my music more.
