DMAIC is an approach that is used to solve problems. The approach derives from lean six SigmaSigma. The approach has five phases: define, measure, analyze, and the last phase is control. The approach is extensively used for improving problems affecting the business and with an unknown cause. The process is based on scientific methods. The approach is mainly used when an organization is faced with an opportunity to improve opportunities.

On the other hand, lean Six SigmaSigma is a process that involves five steps of improvement methodologies that act as a guide to different teams and organizations to have a structured thought and process in understanding the actions and opportunities for the improvement of an organization. For instance, the approach can be used when an organization has fallen short of a goal that is supposed to be achieved. The approach can also use when clients are unhappy or frustrated with the organization. It can also be used when an organization.

The following are the five steps involved.


The first phase is definition, where one defines the organization’s problem or opportunity. In definition, one articulates why the issue matters. One should learn what happens when the problem or the option is not addressed and the problems that may occur when the problem is not addressed. In definition, one writes a concise and good case statement. To conclude with the definition, one should set a vision for improvement. One should also describe how to determine if the problem is fully solved.


In measure, one should gather the information and data that can help develop a deep understanding of the state of the organization. One should measure the problem and the current problems. One should know how frequently the problem can reoccur in the organization. The number of people affected by the problem and the amount of time and money that will be wasted while addressing the problem. One should also measure what the stakeholders need to solve the problem.


In analyzing phase, one should reflect on the information and the data one gathers in the measuring stage. In this phase, one should be able to look at the subjects, forms, and the trends of data available. Gaps and overlaps and the conflicts in stakeholders’ needs should also be identified.


The improvement phase is the stage where one starts to brainstorm the solutions. The solutions generated need to reflect on understanding what your stakeholders want and what is causing the problem. One has a chance to select carefully the improvements that can fully fix the issues facing the organization. In choosing the solution, one selects the solution that is easy to implement and can improve the problems as fast as possible.


This is the final phase where one must take several steps to ensure that the improvement plans are followed and implemented. One has to monitor the problems and how the solutions are helping to help in solving the issues. In this last phase, one ensures that the problem is solved.

How could you determine when and when not to use DMAIC?

When an organization has problems that have a root because that is known and has a solution that the organization knows, then there is no need to use the phases of DMAIC. Instead, the solutions should be implemented immediately to solve the problem. The best goal for DMAIC is always to develop a technical resolution for improvement. DMAIC is not always used to change the leadership of an organization. If an organization’s management and leadership have a problem, other forms of improvement plans should be used but not using the DMAIC. DMAIC can be used for an existing process that requires improvements to align with the customers’ requirements and specifications. It can also be used if the organization does not know the root cause of the performance problems. It is also used when the solution for decreasing defects and improving performances is unknown. The management may also use DMAIC if resolving the problem can significantly help in
