Authors use different approaches in writing. The use of description is one of the approaches authors use to achieve diverse writing goals. The description does not merely provide information about the person or object being described, but it also plays other important roles. In the story “A Boy of Unusual Vision” and other literary works, the authors have used description to set the scene, develop story characters, establish the mood and atmosphere of the story, use symbolism, and provide additional information about an object or a person.
The first description is used to set the scene of the story. In literacy, description defines a story’s setting by providing information about the environment. In this regard, the environment is described using the time of the day, weather, location, and atmosphere. Using description to set the scene allows the reader to visualize where the story takes place, allowing one to be immersed in the narrative. For example, in the story Boy of Unusual Vision,” the author uses description to set the scene when she describes how Calvin’s eyes behave during a ” sunny spring day,” and in ” April,” this sets the scene of the story around spring and also during the season of April as well as on day time. It helps the reader visualize how Calvine’s eyes change with the seasons (Steinbach). Other books, such as “ Coming to Birth” by Marjorie Macgoye, use description to allow the reader to understand Kenya during the colonial period (Macgoye, 2000). The description of the state of emergency and the challenges that Pauline and Martine went through during the period play an important role in setting the various scenes where the story takes place, including Nairobi, Kisumu, and on the train (Macgoye, 2000).
In addition to setting the story’s scene, description is used in character development. Authors use description to reveal additional details about a character, including their physical appearance, mannerisms, personal attributes, and motivations. The description of characters provides more insights into who they are and how they relate to other people in the story. For example, the author provides specific details regarding Calvin’s eyes (Steinbach). She describes them as “ Large and blue” and compares the shade of blue to that of a robin’s egg (Steinbach). The description of the eyes adds depth to the reader’s understanding of Calvine’s appearance, which further allows the readers to have a vivid image of his appearance (Steinbach).
Further, in addition to offering a person’s physical appearance, the description also reveals the characters’ innate nature, feelings, and motives, which further aids in understanding the characters better. For example, in the book ” Coming to Birth,” Pauline reveals that she is naïve and knows little about city life. Additionally, in the book “Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” the main character Julian Mantle is described as a risk taker and a critical thinker who is trapped in a spiritual crisis due to his fearless and risk-taking trait; he faces the crisis and starts his life over again (Sharma, 2003). The examples demonstrate how different authors use descriptions to provide details of a character by revealing their physical appearances and traits.
Further, description is also used to structure symbolism in a narrative. The choice of words to develop symbolism added to the depth of the story and the characters and provided hints at the underlying themes that may be analyzed throughout a story. For example, the description of Calvin’s eyes as “the color of a robin’s egg” and likening them to the sky on a sunny spring day reveals the theme of innocence and purity, which is revealed through the clear blue color of the sky (Steinbach). Additionally, the description also gives rise to the theme of natural beauty. Additionally, in the story “Charlotte Web (Trophy Newbery),” the author uses description to reveal important themes of the story, such as the relationship between humans and animals as well as the various relationships between different animals, such as the pig and the goose, pig and the spider which cumulatively shapes the plot of the story (White). Additionally, description is also used to advance the story. In this regard, description is used in providing additional information and foreshadowing future events, which aid in advancing the plot towards the end of the story.
The use of description in a story is not only limited to describing the object or person, but different authors use it for various reasons. Primarily, description is used to set the scene of the narrative and develop characters, revealing important details such as physical and interpersonal traits; it is also used for symbolism and revealing important themes of the story. In this regard, description influences the plot, the general structure of a story, and the characters.
