A green economy results in improved human well-being and significantly reduces environmental risks and social and ecological (Wang, Young-Doo, 2010). According to Bina (2013), the green economy is the practice of sustainable development that supports public and private sectors to create infrastructure that fosters social and environmental sustainability. To transition into a green economy, solid policies, and collaborative approaches must exist between the private and public sectors. Global warming is a vital threat to the world today. Rising sea levels and increased forest fires have increased due to an increase in the earth’s temperature. This climate change dilemma needs action from both government and companies. Companies have a massive role in achieving sustainable development since they have to focus on achieving their goals today rather than destroying the future.
First, companies are acknowledging the fact that climate change is a menace. In doing so, they are urging their employees to engage in activities that help reduce global warming, like using less hot water, recycling more, and even planting trees—these help reduce carbon emissions. The automotive industry is shifting to more production of electric vehicles to tackle topics such as sustainable commuting. Another approach companies are taking is integrating climate into their business strategy. This means reviewing and updating their vision, mission statement, strategy, and processes to reflect on their climate commitment (Bina, 2013). Others include nurturing nature and influencing climate action in society. Also, reduction of wastage in the workplace and working from home are more approaches. The most profound approach is building sustainability into the brand.
Sustainability is the ability to maintain or support a process over time. In business, sustainability should aim to reduce environmental and social impacts resulting from daily operations. Switching to sustainable products and services varies between companies, depending on their goals. Educating the employees is a highly recommendable strategy. One empowers employees and agrees to achieve their targets by incorporating sustainability. Also, the employees learn the various approaches they can take to reduce climate change, such as switching off unnecessary lights and adjusting their thermostats. Reviewing the supply chain is necessary. In terms of reducing carbon emissions, a company can reduce transportation by moving the production of goods nearer to customers, saving fuel costs and emissions. According to (Najam & Selin, 2011), installing smart sensors within your facility can ensure that heating, cooling, and electricity are shut off when it is not necessary. Other recommendations include the implementation of sustainable practices and conducting sustainability assessments.
A few sustainable employment positions and opportunities look promising in the future. The skills and qualifications of each job varies depending on the framework. An urban planner is responsible for designing sustainable communities and developing programs that cohere with environmental regulations. An environmental consultant will consult with everyone, including individuals, government organizations, and private companies. Their work is to advise on matters like air, water, and soil pollution. A sustainability engineer will be responsible for designing and implementing renewable energy projects. It might be an exciting and profound career since they also develop plans for increased energy efficiency. Other careers include sustainability consultant, Green Architect, Waste Management Specialist, Ecologist, Environmental Geologist, and Renewable energy engineer.
