MTU Aviation Engines AG produces and markets aviation engine modules and components. It works via two segments: OEM (Commercial and Military Engine) and MRO (Commercial Maintenance). The OEM section is responsible for developing and manufacturing engine modules, components, spare parts, and final assembly (GlobalData Plc). Commercial engine maintenance and logistical support fall within the MRO category. Furthermore, it is an engine company that produces low-pressure turbines, high-pressure compressors, and turbine hub frames (GlobalData Plc). The corporation creates, produces, and sells commercial and military aircraft engines. MTU Aero Engines manufactures engines for commercial applications, including corporate jet propulsion systems and narrow-body aircraft engines that include the world’s most powerful turbojet and engine technologies. MTU offers commercial engine maintenance services for aviation, military engines, and industrial gas turbines. The firm also offers maintenance, repair, and overhaul services (Aviation Pros, 2020). It services the aerospace, military, and energy sectors. The company’s operations include North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and other regions.

Why they need an environmentally sustainable direction

As an engine manufacturer and industry leader, they want to actively promote the growth of the aviation sector, which is why they need a sustainability program (MTU, 2022). MTU IS has focused its efforts on achieving zero-emission flight and combating climate change. A key goal for the aviation sector as a whole is zero emissions, which aligns with MTU Aero Engines’ distinct perspective (African Airlines Association, 2022). In addition to offering realistic options and opportunities for environmentally friendly commercial propulsion systems, MTU’s Clean Air Engine (Claire) technology project sets targets for reaching emissions-free flight in three stages. Sustainable and alternative aviation fuels are important. The public was first presented to Claire during this year’s ILA, scheduled in Berlin from June 22 to 26 (African Airlines Association, 2022). Reducing temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels, if achievable, is a reoccurring subject in the most recent edition of Claire, which comes after the original, released in 2007 (African Airlines Association, 2022). In the past, the aircraft sector has focused mostly on CO2 emissions when establishing targets. However, going forward, other noteworthy aviation climate impact targets will also cover the effects of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and contrails.

Due to their improved performance, flight fuel cells are expected to be used on short- and medium-distance flights starting in 2050, significantly reducing the climate effect of commercial aviation (African Airlines Association, 2022). MTU experts want to increase departmental efficiency to meet the zero-emissions target. For MTU, one thing is certain: to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goals, propulsion technology and energy sources that provide climate-neutral flying must be commercially available by 2050 (African Airlines Association, 2022). MTU is working to reduce aviation’s environmental impact as fast as possible in industry, academia, and research.

To improve environmental management, a system must be developed to ensure that it puts MTU Engines in check in terms of commitment and enhances environmental cleanliness. Moreover, ISO 14001 will be used because it provides one of the most significant benefits of implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS), which is recognized as a firm that takes environmental responsibility seriously and strives to reduce its effect (Lachapelle et al., 2015).
