Three Unethical Behaviors of This Counselor

The first unethical behavior counselor portrayed minimization and dismissal of client concerns. The client claimed to have a “fear of being buried alive in a box” but the counselor dismissed her concerns and offered simplistic solutions as just “stop it.” Unethically, the counselor’s approach failed to acknowledge the client’s issue complexity and neglected underlying psychological factors contributing to her claustrophobia and bulimia (Viroquavinny, 2007).Secondly, the counselor lacked empathy and compassion. the counselor in the entire interaction demonstrates a lack of empathy and compassion toward the client’s struggles. The counselor’s attitude undermines the therapeutic relationship and fails to create a safe and trusting environment for the client. Thirdly, unethically the counselor portrayed unprofessional conduct as he made sarcastic remarks which violates ethical standards of professionalism and undermines the effectiveness of the counseling process.

Two Moral Principles Violated

The counselor violated the beneficence moral principle by dismissing the client’s phobia. Throughout the interaction, the Counselor failed to prioritize the client’s well-being and the goal of promoting positive mental health outcomes by using an ineffective approach. Secondly, respect for autonomy was violated as the counselor disregarded the client’s fear and insisted on a simplistic solution without considering the client’s autonomy or individual circumstances (Viroquavinny, 2007). As evidenced in the video the counselor’s approach to his client’s concern violated the principle of respecting her right to decision-making and self-determination in therapy

Counselor’s Behaviors That Were Ethical

From the 2-minute video counseling session, there are no discernible ethical behaviors exhibited by the counselor. Counselor’s interactions with clients portray dismissiveness, lack of empathy, and unprofessional behaviors which predominantly translate to unethical conduct.

Most Significant Ethical Violation in This Clip

Failure to uphold the ethical principle of beneficence is the most significant ethical violation evidenced throughout counseling sessions. The principle of beneficence requires counselors to promote the well-being of their clients and act in their best interests. Therefore, violating beneficence in a counseling session means the counselor is not proactive as evidenced in the video (Viroquavinny, 2007). in the video counselor neglected to act in the client’s best interests by providing simplistic and ineffective solutions to her complex issues despite being her concern. Failing to address her underlying concerns and listening to her opinion jeopardized causing further emotional harm as she felt trivialized for her experiences and struggles.

If You Were A Supervisor How Would I Assist Counselor Resolves Ethical Issues

If I were their supervisor I would help the counselor resolve ethical issues by providing immediate feedback and guidance on the inappropriate nature of their interactions. Secondly, I would train counselors on ethical principles, therapeutic techniques, and professional conduct that emphasize on importance of active listening and empathy in fostering a therapeutic relationship.

Thirdly, as a supervisor, I would offer the counselor regular consultation sessions to enlighten him on ethical dilemmas and appropriate intervention strategies to be upheld in a professional counseling session. Lastly, as a supervisor, I guide the counselor on effective communication because some unethical issues were fostered by the use of sarcasm and condescending language that undermined the therapeutic relationship between him and his client. The counselor’s style of communication seemed unprofessional and ineffective.

My Overall Reaction to the Video

The counselor’s behavior is unethical and potentially harmful to the client my reaction to the video is one of concern and disappointment. throughout the counseling session counselor’s behavior was unethical (Viroquavinny, 2007). Therefore, counselor behavior highlights the importance of embracing training and supervision in the counseling field to ensure counselors uphold ethical standards, are competent, and offer compassionate care to their clients. Effective therapy should be collaborative to provide effective support to the clients experiencing challenges in their lives and not a platform for judgment and dismissal. counselor’s behavior underscored the need for awareness and sensitivity to clients’ experiences, struggles, and obligation to tailor interventions to achieve unique needs and circumstances.
