Reagan stated in his 1981 initial address that” government isn’t the result of our problem; government is the problem.” He argued that excessive government regulation and taxation stifled profitable growth and limited openings for individuals and businesses (The American Presidency Project, 1985). He also presented his plan for reducing levies and regulations to encourage private investment and job creation.

Still, opponents of the proposition argued that it would lead to income inequality and a reduction in government profit, performing in cuts to social interest programs. The administration argued that the duty cuts would stimulate profitable growth, increasing government profit, but this didn’t.
