Abstract

The mental health care-seeking behaviors of ethnic minority teenagers are composed of socio-cultural factors that should be taken into consideration in their provision of care. The culture that one operates within, within which ethnic minority adolescents are part, deeply affects their approach toward mental health issues and help-seeking. Creating a strong system of familial and neighborhood support networks is one of the main tools to ensure the presence of resilience in adolescents and to meet their mental health needs at the same time. Increasing the cultural competency of psychiatrists, developing culturally suitable services, and ensuring equal access for all are necessary conditions for achieving equal access to mental services. Recognizing the diversity and the overlap of the groups that make up ethnic minority communities will allow us to develop interventions that respond to the needs of the various subgroups of the population which will lead to comprehensive and egalitarian mental health support systems for all nineteenth-century adolescents. Through combined actions and a sense of cultural humility, we can enable ethnic minority adolescents to search for help, receive support, and succeed in socio-emotional as well as psychological life.
