Tyler Perry Movies

Tyler Perry is an American actor, producer, screenwriter, and director. On September 13th 1969, he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States. Perry performed in some of his work, such as Madea, an elderly woman character. Perry used several film styles in his movie production, such as the Orthodox filmmaking style. Perry produced and directed most of the plays in the 1990s and early 2000s (Bvuma 2018). He also directed several television series, such as Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, which has been aired in eight seasons on the TBS. According to the Forbes list in 2011, Tyler Perry was listed as the highest-paid man in the entire entertainment business earning $130 million (Bvuma 2018). He was worked with Opray Winfrey in her channel Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The sole purpose of the partnership was to unite all Perry’s previous scripted television services to a program known as OWN.

Conversely, Perry has created several movies using Opray Winfrey Network (OWN), such as The Haves and the Have Nots. The movie gave OWN international recognition for its relevance in the entire globe. Perry also filmed and directed several movies such as Star Trek (2009), Alex Cross(2102), Gone Girl (2014), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(2009), Vice(2018), and Don’t look up (2012). Tyler Perry was born in New Orleans, Louisiana; he was the Son of Willie Maxine Perry and Emmitt Perry. His father had three siblings, and his father was a very bitter and angered person. At some point, Perry contemplated suicide as an act of escaping his father’s beatings. Contrary to his father, his mother was more caring and loving and would take him to church every weekend. At the age of 16, he changed his name from Emmitt to Tyler as an act of distancing himself away from his father. Perry revealed that he was molested at ten by his friends’ mother. The DNA result indicated that Emmitt was not Perry’s biological father. Perry did not complete his high school education even though he earned a GED. Watching the episodes of The Opray Winfrey Show in his early 20s, he learned that act of writing could assist a person in working out of his problems. This motivated Perry to commence his Career in writing and directing plays as a teenager.

Career

Perry’s Career commenced in 1990 in Atlanta, where his music I know I’ve Been Changed was performed in a community theatre. The whole performance was financed by Perry with his $12000 savings. In his play, he demonstrated the Christianity themes such as forgiveness, self-worth, dignity, love, and trust as he incorporated the child abuse issues and dysfunctional families. Perry continued with the play and restaged it in Atlanta in 1998 at House of Blues and fox Theatre. In the movie, Madea’s Family reunion is where Perry made his debut as director of the movies from his lucrative production skills. On February 26, Madea’s Family Reunion opened as number one in the box office category earning $30 million (Johnson 2018). The movie project Daddy’s Little Girl, which was released on February 14th 2007, grossed over $31 million. The second project, directed by Perry on October 12, 2007, Why Did I Get Married, topped the list as the most popular movie earning $21 million that weekend. The contribution of Perry in the film industry saw several new actors coming into play, such as Janet Jackson, Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Idris Elba, and Gabrielle Union. On March 21, 2008, Perry produced a project, Meet the Browns, which topped as the 2nd with a $20 million gross profit in the production weekend. On September 12, 2008, Preys’s movie The Family earned a gross of $37 million, topping that month.

On February 20th 2009, Madea Goes to Jail opened the month with a gross of $41 million, which emerged as the largest opening film in the entire United States. This was Perry’s seventh film after the commencement of the Lion’s Gate Entertainment film production. After this project, Perry embarked on producing an alone project termed as I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which was produced in 2009 as an affiliate of Madea’s character. This movie was Perry’s eighth film, and it made position one in the box office category. Perry later teamed with Oprah Winfrey in producing the film Precious which was based on the novel Push by Sapphire. On April 2, a sequel of Why Did I Get Married Too was produced by Perry, which features Jill Scott, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, and Tasha Smith. Perry appeared in the movie Madea’s Big Happy Family performed on the stage in 2011. The next film which Perry produced was Good Deeds, where he played the leading role of Wesley Deeds. Tyler’s book, Don’t Make a Black Woman Take off Her Earrings, was recognized as the bestselling book on April 11th 2006 (Martin 2019). The book hardcover remained the number one selling book reaching 30000 copies topping over 12 weeks. Perry was awarded as the best humor book in 2006 by Quill Awards. The second book Higher is waiting was published on November 14th, 2017 (Martin 2019). The book emerged as position five in the New York Times, one of the nests selling books in the United States.

Perry acquired over 330-acre in Atlanta, where he built a studio. The studios were used to produce the HBO films, the immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and the series Walking Dead. The studio location also contains hotels, White House Replica and mock cheap hotels, and a trailer park. Perry studio was ranked as one of the largest studios in the entire United States country. In 2021 the movie gone Girl was awarded the best supporting film in the African-American film critics’ association film. The movie diary of a mad black woman won the outstanding actor and outstanding writer in the BET comedy awards category.

Critical Opinion

Perry has met several criticisms from his work from several people in the American film industry. Director Spike Lee criticized Perry’s work in 2009 by stating that his work promotes backwardness but does not advocate for change in the African American culture. According to Lee, Perry wanted to provide what he thinks American residents will love but not love in his films. The second Criticism came from Jamilah Lemieux, a National Public Radio journalist who criticized Meet the Browns and House of Payne’s work, which Perry produced. In his statements, he stated that Perry was propagating an old stereotype narrative in his movies, mainly focusing on African American cultures. Lemieux wanted Perry not to picture African Americans as bad cultures by mocking the habits of black American mothers. The contention of this Criticism comes from his movie Madea which Lemieux sees as a movie created to laugh at the African culture society. Perry has received a lot of Criticism from several African American residents from his view of creating humor on the African American residents. Perry also received Criticism for not using African Americans in his film writings, where he defended that they do not provide the best adequate quality of his standards.
