The Role of Traditional and Social Media in Contemporary American Society.

Traditional media houses and social media play an important role in spreading news and information and enlightening society (Lindgren, 2017). However, they possess a stark difference in the credibility of the information propagated. Considering this, this paper investigates the role of social media in American news media and the social media organizations’ responsibility to provide credible information.

Even though traditional media still serve as highly trusted news sources, social media are increasingly considered credible by the general population. Compared to the traditional press, social media often provides more up-to-date information. The practice of actively perusing news on social media platforms is a modern phenomenon that has gained widespread acceptance (Lindgren, 2017). Most importantly, news can be found for free on social networking sites, and attention-grabbing headlines can draw readers in. The reality of social media, however, needs to be understood. Unfortunately, many times the sources need to be included. As a result, presuming prejudice exists is not unreasonable. Traditional media continue to have more credibility than social media. The reliable news sources used by traditional media are kept up. The simple truth cannot be replaced when reporting the news. The media industry is highly regulated and competitive. It also has robust people and material resources for its commercial property, guaranteeing high standards in reporting. Conventional news outlets have continued to have significance because of the vital information they serve their readers.

Social media serves many purposes in today’s world, and its popularity has grown dramatically. It’s not just a more convenient way to talk to people and expand your social circle; it’s also a centralized hub for gathering and sharing news or information, and it has the potential to affect real-time policy decisions at all levels of government and business (Lindgren, 2017). Social media played a crucial role in spreading news and information about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Since the beginning of the conflict, Ukrainian forces have relied on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to immediately respond to Russian assaults, coordinate attacks, and keep the public apprised of enemy activities.

As a public service, the media must accurately report the news (Lindgren, 2017). The media has the propensity to exaggerate tragic stories to draw large audiences. To report on issues without favoring any particular group, philosophy, or political party is essential if journalists are to be trusted. Journalists shouldn’t exaggerate stories for the sake of shock value, and they should be as forthcoming as they possibly are about the identities of their sources so that readers can do their research. If providing citizens with the knowledge they need to participate in a democratic society is the foundation of ethical news reporting ethics, then that information must be conveyed accurately. News organizations need to double-check their facts before publishing them.

While social media companies can’t be held accountable for the content posted by their users, they can be held liable for any practices that may foster an atmosphere where harmful behavior or false information thrives (Lindgren, 2017). For example, Facebook’s algorithm has been blamed for facilitating the spread of disinformation due to the high levels of interaction such posts tend to receive. Although social media sites are frequently criticized for the negative outcomes that may be traced back to their presence, they have no control over the content posted by their members. However, they need to create a space that rewards constructive conduct and punishes those who spread misinformation.

In conclusion, traditional and social media have an important role in contemporary American society. While larger audiences prefer social media due to its freedom and ease of accessibility, traditional media are well known for credible and accurate news and information. The problem arises from the need for social media platforms to regulate the information that users post. However, they should strive to create an environment that fosters positive behavior.
