Background
Emotional intelligence (EI) indicates a person’s capacity to identify, regulate, and understand emotions. To accomplish this, the concept is built on four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. In general, each of these dimensions helps nurses handle any crisis with less stress, fewer emotional outbursts, and fewer unanticipated outcomes (Steinberg, 2019). First, you take control of your life when, for example, you are conscious of your feelings (self-awareness) and those around you (social awareness). However, it is impossible to decide how to respond to those feelings healthily while mindful of them.
Furthermore, managing several relationships among numerous individuals during a crisis is crucial. Relationship management is what I refer to as “friendliness with a purpose,” the ability to persuade people to follow your lead through various means, such as problem-solving, teamwork, and motivation. Social awareness, self-control, and self-awareness are prerequisites for all nursing competencies. While you cannot reverse a crisis right now, having emotional intelligence will make it much easier to go through the next one. This paper describes the concepts of emotional ability as applied in nursing and healthcare facilities.
Purpose of Emotional Intelligence
Enhancing patient care quality, strengthening patient-nurse interactions, and promoting general well-being in the healthcare context are the goals of emotional intelligence in nursing. In theory, it should raise the standard of treatment that patients receive. EI positively impacts the dimensions of nursing practice (Khademi et al., 2021). Consequently, nursing policymakers are advised to consider training initiatives to bolster nurses’ emotional intelligence and improve nursing care. It is advised to use both indicators simultaneously because patients and nurses can be reliable indications of the calibre of nursing care. Many health sciences require developing emotional intelligence (EI) skills and their clinical application, particularly nursing, since it entails patient care.
Literature Analysis
Al-Oweidat et al. (2023) discovered that emotional intelligence can impact medical decision-making. This suggests that healthcare providers must maintain objectivity in including a systematic method for patient difficulties and concerns when making clinical choices. Making wise theoretical and healthcare decisions influences nurses’ sense of autonomy and active engagement as dependent medical practitioners, which may enhance their motivation to stay with the company and strengthen their commitment to the program (Al-Oweidat et al., 2023). According to this concept, nurses’ emotions and feelings in reaction to their surroundings and capacity for emotional regulation can substantially impact several work areas. Therefore, to generate emotionally competent nursing graduates for the twenty-first century, it is advised that this skill be incorporated into the inter-professional curriculum and be taught legally and continually.
Raghubir (2018) contended that four common traits of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social/relationship management make a significant part of nursing practice in informing decisions. These attributes enhance the ability of advanced practice nurses to perform their duties in a way that benefits patients, families, colleagues, and them as individuals and working professionals. They also promote the mental health of these nurses. Since it can affect decision-making, critical thinking, the general well-being of professional nurses, and the quality of patient care and results, emotional intelligence is crucial to the development of nursing practice.
Development of Cases
Cases involving nurses who successfully manage complex patient interactions, offer emotional support to patients facing difficult diagnoses, or effectively communicate with colleagues during a crisis can be developed to highlight the significance of emotional intelligence in nursing. In these circumstances, prior research has demonstrated the significance of emotional intelligence (EI) for nursing, including developing therapeutic nurse-patient relationships (Dou et al., 2023). In the face of shifting circumstances and stress overload, emotional intelligence (EI) enables nurses to comprehend and manage the complexities of interpersonal interactions and to self-adjust, reduce stress, and increase productivity. Staff members with emotional intelligence abilities are likelier to have favourable patient experiences, higher job satisfaction among medical professionals, and better customer service experiences.
Development and Discussion
Emotional intelligence can help students navigate difficult discussions about patient decisions that could cause conflict within interprofessional teams. It can give team members the abilities and self-assurance they require to express issues and build connections based on mutual respect without getting too worked up (Ndawo, 2021). Integrating the four domains of emotional intelligence is significant in enhancing nurses’ psychological welfare by avoiding near occasions of stress associated with workplace crises and dilemmas. Improving comprehensive, personalized patient care standards depends on emotional intelligence stability, shaping the decision-making and practical problem-solving process. According to published research, the idea of emotional intelligence has evolved over the past 20 years (Ndawo, 2021). Further research is advised to improve emotional intelligence in nursing practice.

Emotional intelligence is essential to nursing because nurses frequently work with patients and their families in challenging situations. Nurses must recognize that the patients and families they care for are going through a difficult time emotionally. One of the most important variables influencing the nursing care of patients is emotional intelligence. An approach to idea analysis is one of the most important ways to advance nursing knowledge. The various meanings, uses, causes, effects, and empirical referents of emotional intelligence were determined. The four traits that comprise emotional intelligence are significant in the practice and management of patients and in the wellness of healthcare practitioners.
