In Aeneid, Virgil gives glowing praise to Rome and its people. He has spiritualized, idealistic, and aspiration ideas about Rome. Defines the Roman empire as majestic and sacred, ordained by destiny to rule the world. While describing the empire, Virgil cunningly inserts several show-topping glimpses of Rome’s future military and political triumphs. For instance, he claims that he saw a golden age of human forms that was established by the gods emerging during Augustus’s reign. Further, it exalts the new Roman empire and glorifies its virtues and other finest features by using the personification of Aeneas, an epic hero who represents the archetypal Roman. He embodied some of the most important attributes, especially the sense of duty and responsibility, which made the empire influence and love around the world. Although the empire was experiencing peace and tranquility, the empire was marred by an imperial regime that merged republican and imperial Rome into one.
During hardship, Aeneas consoles himself by remembering his sense of duty and the destiny of the empire that he is fated to find. Thus, he constantly subordinates his own desires to his dream of a new Rome. His is a true illustration of how many political elites in Rome would sacrifice their own dreams and predicaments that they underwent under the governance of emperor Augustus for the sake of the republic Virgil. That is, they had to submerge their petty grievances for the greater good of the public. In this case, the goal was for a stronger and unified state that would be accomplished through peace and unity. Many Romans contended with the fact that the gods were concerned about Rome’s future.
Moreover, in the story of Aeneas, Virgil gives a link to the destiny of Rome. For instance, he uses the heroic attributes of Aeneas to explain the historical rise of the Roman empire and also give predictions about its future success. Besides, the characteristics that Aeneas depicted illustrated the qualities that were believed to be associated with Rome,, which was important in ensuring a peaceful destiny. Ones that, according to Virgil, could not be consumed by battle fury. According to his attributes, Rome is and merciful and never starts fights. While executing the mandates of the empire, one had to be mindful of honor and a sense of duty to their family and the empire. The Aeneid was meant to inspire Roman pride by showcasing the Aeneas’ heroic journey. Aeneid justifies the Roman empire, and Virgil’s perfections of verse in this poem were just an illustration of the grand facades of the Roman state. For instance, Augustus prides himself on having built the city of Rome from scratch.
Virgil’s definition of empire is a sense of responsibility, duty, and honor; however, this definition needs to be revised because it was meant to serve political objectives. For instance, Virgil promotes the ideas of Augustus and the Roman Empire. It also projects a society that is highly dependent on the empire and the emperor. Some members of the society said that peace and tranquility were experienced within the community because of the emperor. Some even stated that the grace of the Romans maintained peace and fortune. However, hffas, argues that the empire was an authoritarian that caused discomfort among natives and locals in parts under Roman reign, which led to civil wars and the disintegration of the Roman empire. For instance, Romans believed that it was their destiny to rule and conquer the world. Yet their conquests led many locals to feel dejected.
In many instances, Roman brutality was their event through deaths and destruction of property. The Romans themselves did not adhere to their own rule of engagement in wars, that is, sparing the defeated. This is seen in the conclusion of the poem when Aeneas kills his enemy and rival, Turnus. The Romans also had the characteristics of imposing their cultures on the natives and locals regarding governance structures, financial systems, administrative languages, and laws. The collapse of the Roman empire could be attributed to the fact that Romans enforced their own laws and culture on the locals after a conquest—this action brood discomfort and political undertones among the native, who eventually rebelled against an authoritarian regime.
