Reflection on Field Visit to the Public Health Authority

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Public Health Authority (Weqaya) and observe how things are done there firsthand. I gained more knowledge about themes and objectives of Weqaya’s strategy for 2023-2025. The three main themes are institutionalization, intervention, and intelligence. I also learned about the eight goals that this authority aims to accomplish over the next three years. These objectives include improving surveillance and early diagnosis, excellence in public health intelligence and knowledge management, development of integrated and well-governed initiatives. At the same time, the enhancement of public health workforce, improvement of public health laboratory capabilities and quality, improvement of institutional performance and excellence, organizational efficiency and sustainability, promotion of a positive and appealing work environment, and strengthening partnerships. During a recent field visit to Weqaya, I observed the following strengths and weaknesses in the operations of the authority.

Strengths

Evidence-based solutions are one of Weqaya’s strengths. Weqaya’s efforts to promote public health concentrate on providing innovative and scientifically supported solutions. This strategy guarantees that the authority’s wellness promotion initiatives are informed and successful. Health awareness initiatives are another strength. In collaboration with the corporate sector and many facets of the community, the authority oversees health education and awareness campaigns in public health (Public Health Authority, 2021). This guarantees that the general population is knowledgeable and prepared to make healthy lifestyle decisions.

Weqaya is also responsible for identifying health issues and establishing a national health registration. This database is valuable for identifying and diagnosing infectious and non-communicable illnesses, coupled with research findings and data from other national databases. Another asset of the authority is global cooperation. To track and follow diseases on a national and worldwide scale, Weqaya collaborates closely with global health organizations like the World Health Organization. The authority may share knowledge and best practices to enhance public health thanks to this collaboration (Public Health Authority, 2021).

Weaknesses

Weqaya’s restricted executive powers are a vital problem. Weqaya, being a legislative body, needs more executive authority to carry out its goals and rules. This may limit its potential to affect change in the public health sector, especially in creating healthier communities and environments (Koornneef et al., 2017). Another issue confronting the authority is the need for more resources. To carry out its duties, the authority relies on the help of the Ministry of Health and other relevant entities. However, a lack of finances may limit its capacity to conduct research and studies and deliver sufficient health education programs. Another drawback is the need for more public awareness. The authority must still be well-known to the public, particularly outside the healthcare sector. This lack of public awareness can limit the effectiveness of its health awareness programs and prevent the public from fully engaging in efforts to promote wellness.

Suggested Solutions

Boost executive authority. The authority may seek executive powers to carry out its policies and rules, especially when fostering healthy neighborhoods and environs. As a result, its influence in the field of public health would grow, and its duties would be efficiently carried out. Second, expand their resources. The authority may seek extra funding from the government and other sources to expand its research and studies, health education efforts, and health awareness campaigns. It will then be able to serve the public and promote wellness more effectively. Finally, increase public awareness. By actively marketing its services and mandates to the general population, Weqaya can boost its prominence. This could include launching a public information campaign, partnering with media outlets, and hosting public events to engage with the community.

In conclusion, the trip to Weqaya was a worthwhile educational opportunity that helped me better comprehend the organization’s difficulties. The authority has several difficulties, including a need for more administrative authority and budget limitations, despite its emphasis on evidence-based solutions and health education initiatives. Weqaya can continue to play a significant role in improving public health and maintaining the well-being of the Kingdom’s residents by tackling these issues.
