Abstract

As organizations are looking for ways to improve productivity, they have started adopting team-based approaches that stress collaboration and accountability. However, applying these tactics requires hard skills training for employees to succeed in this area, which involves their attitudes towards and competencies in problem-solving and decision-making, among other aspects. This essay discusses the training challenges faced by organizations when implementing team-based strategies using a hypothetical retail company as an example. By comparing with other companies that have used team-based approaches, customized solutions are suggested through established human resource development practices. The study concludes that organizations should improve staff members’ communication techniques, discrepancy resolution abilities or processes, objective setting methods, and leaders’ boosting both cultural change and capability enhancement required to enhance efficient teamwork in the organization.

Introduction

In this highly competitive business environment, organizations are seeking strategies to increase productivity and, at the same time, reduce costs. One of the most promising approaches is the implementation of team-based structures that stress teamwork among employees with a common goal. However, the transition to these models requires preparation through strategic training to develop the required mindsets and competencies. With prior groundwork, organizations can avoid poor adoption, dissatisfaction, or failure. This report scrutinizes training challenges anticipated for an assumed 250-employee retail organization mulling over switching to a team-based strategy.
