Over the last few decades, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has continued to rise in different industries. It involves using machines that can simulate human intelligence and perform tasks that would otherwise require human cognition. The development of AI has come a long way since its inception, and today, AI is widely used in various industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation. However, the use of AI also raises several ethical and societal concerns, with some people feeling that the spread of AI will have negative consequences on individuals. These debates have made the development of AI a controversial topic, with many stakeholders weighing the benefits and risks of its use. Bernard Marr, a futurist and influencer, is one of the stakeholders who feel that AI will negatively impact people’s lives. This essay explores Marr’s perspectives and arguments, how stasis theory can help persuade him to believe in the benefits of AI, and the values and evidence that would help build a persuasive argument.
Marr shared his perspectives, arguments, values, and worldview to show the drawbacks of artificial intelligence. He argues that AI has the potential to become biased, cause job loss, shift human experience, and lead to other problems, such as AI terrorism. One of Marr’s main concerns is the possibility of bias in AI algorithms. He explains that because humans are responsible for creating the algorithms, their biases and worldviews may influence the software, leading to discrimination against certain groups or spreading false ideologies. Marr suggests that monitoring and regulating the creators of AI software through government laws and policies could help prevent these adverse outcomes. Another issue that Marr raises is the potential for job loss as AI becomes more prevalent in businesses (Khanzode and Sarode 34). He points out that AI can perform tasks faster and more efficiently than humans, and as a result, certain jobs, such as cashier or customer service representative, have already been replaced by machines. Marr suggests that while technology takes over simpler tasks, humans should be trained for more complex jobs to maintain productivity. The stakeholder also discusses the possible shift in human experience once AI becomes more integrated into people’s lives. He believes a lack of hard work and accomplishment may lead to a lack of meaning in human life. However, he suggests that people could find fulfillment in hobbies or social activities. Marr’s arguments highlight the potential risks of AI and the need for careful consideration of its impact on society.
Stasis theory can help inform the argument in several ways to persuade Marr to accept AI’s positive side. The first step of using the stasis theory is to convince Marr that the point of dispute is AI’s potential benefits and drawbacks. I should acknowledge that AI has both positive and negative effects and that it is crucial to consider both sides of the argument. By framing the debate this way, I will have created a more balanced and objective discussion that considers all the evidence and potential solutions. The second step is to present evidence of the benefits of AI. According to Bhosale and Pujari, some evidence may include increased efficiency, accuracy, and productivity because machines do not get bored or tired (228). AI can help businesses automate tasks, reduce costs, and improve innovation (Makridakis 54). It can also help solve complex problems and create new opportunities for innovation and growth. The third step addresses Marr’s concerns about AI biases and job loss by highlighting the potential solutions to these problems. The fourth step is to acknowledge the potential drawbacks of AI, such as the need for careful monitoring and regulation, the potential for job loss, and the impact on the human experience. The final stage is to propose solutions for managing the potential disadvantages of AI, such as creating new job opportunities, providing education and training programs for workers, and implementing regulations to ensure that people develop and use AI responsibly.
I would emphasize several values and beliefs to persuade Marr to accept that AI is beneficial. To begin with, I would emphasize the value of progress, which focuses on the idea that individuals should strive to improve and advance society and technology continuously. AI can revolutionize many different industries and enhance the quality of life for people all around the world, and it would be absurd to miss out on these opportunities due to fear or resistance to change. In addition, I would emphasize the value of innovation, which highlights the idea that people should be creative and open-minded in their approach to problem-solving. AI provides a new and innovative way of approaching problems and can help find solutions people may not have otherwise considered. Also, I would emphasize the belief that AI is not a threat to human intelligence or creativity but rather a tool that can be used to enhance and amplify these qualities. Finally, I would emphasize the belief that AI can bring about significant positive change in the world, but people must be mindful of the potential risks and take steps to mitigate them. Thus, instead of rejecting AI, individuals should look for ways of using it responsibly to improve life while mitigating potential risks.
Several arguments have already been made to the stakeholder, but they were ineffective in addressing his concerns about the drawbacks of AI. The first argument is that AI is necessary for businesses to remain profitable and competitive. However, this argument fails to address Marr’s concerns about the potential drawbacks of AI, such as job loss and biases, and fails to acknowledge the need for regulations and monitoring. The second argument is that AI can help solve complex problems and create new opportunities for innovation and growth. This argument is ineffective because it does not provide any concrete solutions for managing the potential drawbacks of AI. The third argument that has been presented to Marr is that AI is a natural progression of technology and will improve people’s lives. This argument is ineffective because it is too vague and fails to address Marr’s specific concerns about the potential drawbacks of AI. It also does not provide any concrete solutions for managing these potential drawbacks. Thus, even though some arguments have been presented to Marr, they are ineffective because they do not address his specific concerns about the potential disadvantages of AI and do not provide any concrete solutions for managing these potential drawbacks. To avoid repeating these arguments, I would have to prepare adequately, look for ideas not presented to Marr, and find concrete ways of supporting the new arguments.
I would use several pieces of evidence to persuade Marr to accept that the benefits of AI outweigh the drawbacks. First, I would convince Marr that efforts are already underway to resolve any issues concerning bias in AI algorithms. These efforts include creating diverse teams of developers and using ethical principles to guide AI development to ensure that developers come up with non-biased AI platforms. Second, I would discuss with Marr that as much as AI causes job loss, it also helps create job opportunities, such as AI developers and data analyst positions. Third, AI can enhance human performance by allowing people to focus on tasks that require critical thinking, leading to more fulfilling and rewarding work. Fourth, I would make Marr understand that AI can improve people’s lives by providing individuals with personalized recommendations, optimizing energy consumption, and aiding in medical diagnoses, among other benefits. Yeasmin discusses how AI has revolutionized the health industry by enabling easier diagnoses and better treatment procedures, including surgeries (3). Lastly, AI can help resolve some of humanity’s challenges, such as disease prevention. Thus, as much as AI has some potential drawbacks, it is impossible to ignore all the ways through which it would help make life better.
In conclusion, AI is controversial because some people believe more in its benefits, whereas others feel it affects human lives negatively. Marr is one of the stakeholders who believe that AI will negatively impact people’s lives by leading to job loss, interfering with the human experience, and causing bias. However, despite his values and arguments, he needs to be convinced that AI can have several positive benefits with the right regulation and responsible use. One way to develop a persuading argument is through the stasis theory, which involves acknowledging the controversial issue and finding amicable resolutions. By acknowledging Marr’s point of view and providing evidence on the benefits of AI, one can effectively convince Marr that AI benefits humans.
