Abstract
The establishment of personal rules is not only beneficial for improved self-regulation but also for the achievement of behavioral change. The concepts of establishing individual rules can help improve the behavior transition as they focus on goal setting, action plans taken, strategies implemented, and enhanced self-awareness. This strategy helps to reinforce new habits and encourages individuals to have improved behaviors. By cultivating a culture of improved-mindedness, individuals can improve their chances of behaviors, promote the identification of patterns, and even make sufficient progress. The social determination model has been proposed in this review as one that provides intrinsic motivation for achieving individual growth and a change of behaviors. The social cognitive model has been identified as one that contributes to improved interactions between environmental elements and personal factors. The two theories have been used to explain self-monitoring, goal setting, and achievement of outcomes. The review concludes that applying these factors can help individuals navigate through setbacks and challenges that occur in life.
Personal Rules, Self-Regulation, and Behavior Change
Personal rules are self-imposed guidelines for improved behavior and decision-making. These rules are established based on improved decision-making and governing the conduct of individuals in society. While these rules often vary from one individual to another, they can help improve behaviors and relations with other people. Self-regulation can also be defined as the ability of individuals to manage and control their behaviors, impulses, and emotions. Self-regulation entails resisting immediate gratification while aligning with long-term goals and actions. In behavioral change, self-regulation is helpful as it empowers individuals to make deliberate choices and overcome any challenges that emerge in life. Behavioral change helps engage people in modifying their habits, improving their behaviors’ evolution, and creating a supportive environment that allows them to track their progress. To achieve behavioral change in society, individuals must have set goals, improved behaviors, and enhanced motivational levels.
Personal Rules
In numerous cases, cultural influences often play a significant function in changing personal rules in life. These rules can be explained as a series of norms, customs, and values determining how individuals interact with their culture. Since most of these rules are influenced by the idea of what is right in society, it is essential to understand an individual’s culture when it comes to the formation of their rules (Symbaluk et al., 2016). The core values of an individual often influence their definition of individual standards. The factors that significantly contribute to changes in life experiences and mental processes that contribute to changes in behavior can permanently be established through defined rules. These rules can be explained as a set of strategies and actions that contribute to changes in behavior.
According to the self-cognitive model, the understanding of self-efficacy among individuals has significant improvements in providing control over individuals and their ability to execute a behavior. Environmental and social contexts significantly influence individual behavior and actions in this context. For this reason, people should develop behavioral capacity and knowledge about their surroundings to improve behavioral transformation. Additionally, determining individual outcomes to behavioral change is essential to improving changes in behavior (Sousa et al., 2021). Individuals often establish their rules based on the family environment they have been brought up. For this reason, family members can be crucial in defining the values of individuals in society. Setting goals and personal plans can significantly contribute to and determine changes in personal behavior, an essential factor in determining behavioral change.
Self Regulation
Self-regulation is established when individuals develop the ability to control and monitor emotions to achieve identified goals. Both internal standards that help improve self-regulation can be established as a means of maintaining healthy habits in life. Stress management and impulse control can help establish rules that can improve behavioral transformation (Symbaluk et al., 2016). Having self-control and establishing goals are some of the functions that can be improved by establishing policies to change individual behaviors. Adopting impulse control can also guide individuals in making decisions that can significantly impact their lives.
Behavioral Change
The social determination model provides the need for internal motivation to drive individuals to achieve behavioral change. Adopting the model provides the idea that individuals can be motivated to achieve transformative change by focusing on an improved sense of direction, competence, and autonomy in life (Chew et al., 2022). Competence in an individual’s life is determined by the ability to perceive one’s behavior, the ability to navigate life changes, and the improved ability to achieve a sense of relatedness. According to social determination, individuals must build competence in terms of their skill development to achieve change. They have to set goals, share their goals, and progress in a manner that can be helpful in the attainment of behavioral change in life.
Adopting effective strategies in engaging behavioral transformation is essential in improving changes in behavior. To attain behavioral change, elements contributing to significant changes in behavior should be considered. Factors such as life experiences, life events, friends, and culture should also be considered (Chew et al., 2022). Individuals should consider life experiences and expectations. Once goals have been set, appropriate actions that contribute to the behavior change should be considered. These elements can significantly impact change in behavior among individuals.
Conclusion
Self-regulation among people is an internal process that focuses on executive processes in daily life. To understand elements that contribute to improved self-regulation, factors such as intrinsic dynamics and reciprocal relations should be adopted to achieve success. Additionally, understanding factors such as self-awareness, self-compassion, and improved perseverance in life can significantly contribute to the improvement of behavioral transformation. These dynamics can be adopted in individuals’ lives to achieve changes through different facets of life, such as exercise counseling, diet management, motivation, emotional wellness, and even mindfulness. Understanding these elements can improve individual performance in life as they can help people improve their routine activities. Knowledge about the social cognitive models and self-determination can be used in examining self-regulation, self-monitoring, and achievement of set expectations. These models provide knowledge about the understanding of numerous metrics responsible for attaining behavioral change in society.
