Abstract
This paper entails an analysis of two videos from the ATI Achieve Module, that is, the video on Classroom Skills and the one on “Preparing for Clinical Experience.” An overview of the videos and the additional resources from google search and reputable databases will be provided. A comparison of the Google search findings and the selected database will also be provided. In the two videos, the resonating topics are active listening and post-clinical conferences. Corresponding scholarly articles retrieved from CINHAL, PubMed, and Google affirm the significance of active listening in fostering success in nursing education.
Video Analysis
Video 1 – Classroom Skills
The Classroom Skills video from the ATI Achieve module covers essential skills for success in a classroom setting. Various aspects such as note-taking techniques, time management and listening are covered in the video. Therefore, the topic that resonated with me in the video- was the importance of active listening, which enhances comprehension and retention of information for better academic performance. Techniques such as maintaining eye contact, asking for clarification, and paraphrasing facilitate active listening
Additional Resources
Using the search term “active listening AND classroom,” I retrieved a scholarly article from CINAHL titled “Active listening skills as predictors of success in community college students. Community College Journal of Research and Practice by Eggenberger (2021) this article describes how active listening skills are powerful predictors of success among college students. (https://doi.org/10.1080/10668926.2019.1706667). Applying the same search terms on Google, I found the article “The Importance of Listening Skills in School: Enhancing Academic Success. Everyday Speech,” which holds that listening skills are essential for student’s academic success by contributing to effective learning, classroom engagement, and academic performance. Therefore, the Google search and the library database yielded consistent information regarding the benefits of active listening in the educational context.
Video 2 – Preparing for Clinical Experience
The video “Preparing for Clinical Experience” highlights the strategies for adequate preparation during clinical experiences in nursing education. It emphasizes that the more clinical experience a student has, the better prepared they are to enter the nursing field. Some of the strategies provided in the video include pre-conference activities, proper dress code, and making maximum use of learning opportunities during the clinical rotation. The topic on post-conference sessions resonated with me the most as it provides opportunities for reflection, feedback and leaning from shared experiences. It also enhances critical thinking skills and promotes continuous improvement in clinical practice.
Additional resources
A google search yielded a career and education guide titled “Clinical conferences”. The theory of constructivism is thought to support the use of clinical conferences to combine previously learned concepts with new knowledge. Therefore, clinical conferences help students to integrate theory into practice, create new knowledge and build on existing knowledge (https://www.myamericannurse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Clinical-conferences.pdf ).
On the other hand, a search on PubMed using the search terms “pre and post-conference in nursing clinical experience” yielded an article “Effectiveness of Pre- and Post-Clinical Conferences in Improving Clinical Learning Among Midwifery Students of Jimma University: Pre-Experimental Study” by Kitaba (2022). This article assesses the effectiveness of pre- and post-clinical conferences in improving clinical leaning among undergraduate midwifery students. It was concluded that pre- and post-clinical conferences were an effective clinical teaching strategy that should be adopted by all nursing educators (https://doi.org/10.2147%2FAMEP.S379061). The two additional resources both discuss and support the use of clinical conferences before, during and after clinical experience to enhance nursing education.
Conclusion
In summary, the two videos are very instrumental as they provide insights into essential skills and strategies for nursing education. The first video on Classroom Skills provide strategies such as active listening to enhance academic success. Good academic performance in classwork means a good transition to practice. However, strategies such as post-clinical conferences need to be implemented to ensure theory is integrated successfully into practice. Therefore, post-clinical conference emerges as a key topic in the second video. Further evidence and perspective s on these topics are provided by the additional resources which focus on enhancing learning outcomes and professional development in nursing education.
