Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing

Technology in nursing has improved the delivery of care to patients by fostering communication between patients and care service deliverers, increased access to information such as patient data, and enhanced monitoring of the patients to their convenience. I chose the e-medical system, which comprises (EHR) and (EMR). The system is used to store patient data relevant to persons under particular care, including demographics, patient diagnosis, medication, and health data. I chose this technology since I believe patient and health data is the most crucial element in delivering care, and it should always be maintained. Also, the e-medical system can support other systems in a healthcare facility by providing evidence-based decision support and outcomes reporting. I used a literature review as a research process to collect and critique data from various journals. This annotated bibliography provides a clear insight into how the e-medical system assists nurses while conducting their duties and the relevance of the data they store in improving patient outcomes.

The electronic medical record contains patient information in a digital chart, while the electronic health record contains a patient’s health information. The article, however, discusses the critical role played by the two in providing quality health services in healthcare organizations. The two systems have been defined as having the ability to provide patient empowerment, enhancing patient satisfaction and involving the patient in decision-making regarding their health.

The authors discuss the three subfactors in detail, and the investigation was divided into two sectors. The authors explain every factor in detail and go further to establish many criteria to come up with a well-informed decision matrix.

The selected respondents provided data on how security regarding the kind of data contained in the electronic medical record is secured and what would happen in case of a breach. The information enlightens the reader on how secure their information is if it is stored in the system. It encourages the reader to accept the use of the system since, over the years, more firewalls have been established to safeguard every information contained in it. The author lastly describes three determinants that affect the behavioural intention of healthcare experts regarding the use of the system, and it also focuses on the study conducted in Malaysia. The three determinants are Authentication, performance expectancy, and habit.

The article aims at discussing the implementation of the electronic medical record in Sub-Saharan Africa. Issues that encourage or hinder the system’s usability in the region have been discussed in detail. Data obtained from the study is explained in particular, and several issues that affect the use of the system have been raised. The main problem pinpointed by the author is the ease of learning how to handle the procedure. Ease of learning how to drive a system enhances the efficiency of the system use, user satisfaction, and positively addresses system usability.

The author brings into perspective the excitement brought by the system on the promise of accurate, real-time access to patient data through electronic medical health records. Many countries across the region are quickly adapting to the system, and healthcare services are improving significantly throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. The author obtained information through studies conducted by the health care management information systems and provides rich information on the use of the plan across sub-Saharan Africa.

Conclusion

The use of e-health which is electronic medical records and health records, has improved the efficiency of healthcare services worldwide. However, many issues have been raised regarding the safety of patient data in the systems. The systems security has been improved over the years to avoid any problems that might lead to a breach. Regarding nursing, e-health has reduced human errors, positively impacted the nursing shortage, and enhanced accessibility to health care.
