Ethical Practice in Cross-Cultural Professional Interactions

Introduction

In clinical practice, professionals get to interact with diverse populations. It is of utmost importance for all clients to feel accommodated regardless of their ethnicity and culture. One principle of cultural humility is reflection, where individuals should acknowledge that there is always something new to learn from diverse cultures. Regard is also significant in cultural humility; individuals should approach others with respect and ensure that personal biases and stereotypes do not affect interactions (Foronda, 2020). Cultural humility is also based on respect; one should be willing to preserve the dignity of individuals regardless of whether one agrees with their cultural values and beliefs.

Summary of role-play scenario

The role-play scenario involves a conversation between Brian and Brittany. Brittany has just completed her bachelor’s in business and wishes to move to further her studies and be with her boyfriend. She wants to attend Pepperdine University for her MBA, where her boyfriend will start a law degree.However, her mother wants her to return to Oklahoma and work for her Indian tribe. The main purpose of the conversation is to help her understand how to explain to her mother why moving away is important(Brian Hudspeth, 2014). At the end of the conversation, Brian recommends that both Brittany and her boyfriend Ryan talk to Brittany’s mum about the issue to make her understand that getting a quality education will make her more resourceful to her Indian tribe.

The diverse population represented and Cultural humility themes

The diverse population in the scenario is native Americans, and the cultural humility themes explored include openness, supportive interactions, and respect. Brittany indicated in the conversation that she is a Native American, specifically from the Indian tribe. During the conversation, Brian showed a lot of openness when he asked questions to clarify cultural areas he did not understand. Self-awareness is exhibited by both Brian and Brittany in the scenario. Brian is aware of his limitations and knowledge gaps, while Brittany is aware of the values, traditions, and beliefs within the Indian tribe (Park, 2020). Despite the cultural differences, they have the utmost respect for each other.

Cultural or Lifestyle themes

The cultural and lifestyle themes in the scenario include communism, family, education, love, and marriage. Brittany comes from a culture that is communist, and that is why her mother is very insistent on her working for her tribe. She mentions that joining the university was also celebrated by her entire community, who felt like part of the achievement. Family is very important to Brittany; she does not want to disappoint her mother. Education is important to Brittany and her boyfriend, and that is why they want to explore their studies at Pepperdine University(Brian Hudspeth, 2014). Brittany and her boyfriend are in love, and she mentioned they intend to marry.

Application of Ethical Standards

The interaction between Brian and Brittany was ethical, and various ethical standards were applicable in the scenario. TAP 21 recommends recognizing family, social, and community systems during treatment. Brian appreciates this element and thus asks Brittany to converse with her mother and come to an agreement. The APA principle of beneficence encourages professionals to prioritize the well-being and welfare of those they work with (Varkey, 2021). This is seen in how Brian is concerned about Brittany maintaining a good relationship with her mother and boyfriend.

ACA recommends that professionals respect clients’ values and not impose their personal beliefs and values. This is seen in how Brian, the professional in the scenario, is very careful to respect the client’s values when offering solutions and recommendations. NAADAC recommends that clients should have autonomy, and this is preserved in the case where Brittany is given the freedom to choose what is best for her (Varkey, 2021). TIPS recommends respect for clients, and we can see how Brian is respectful towards Brittany the entire time.

Accommodations for lifestyle and cultural needs

Brian fully accommodates Brittany’s cultural and lifestyle needs in the scenario. Brittany’s cultural needs include a desire to respect the communist nature of her culture. She wants her family members and Indian tribe to feel they are part of her success. In this case, her lifestyle need is to be with her boyfriend while furthering her studies(Brian Hudspeth, 2014). According to Brian, this can be accommodated by explaining the importance of quality education to Brittany’s mum and going ahead to further studies.

Conclusion

Brittany finds herself in a dilemma in the scenario where she wants to further her studies and be with her boyfriend, but her mother wants her to work in Oklahoma for her Indian tribe.Brian is very professional in the scenario and respects Native American beliefs and traditions. He is also open and willing to learn from Brittany. When interacting with diverse populations, ethical practice is significant in helping ensure all parties feel respected.
