Effects of Social Media on Beauty

Social media is a major issue when it comes to one’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Because of the media’s constant depiction of ideal beauty and body image comparisons, men and women throughout the globe make beauty judgments that are impacted by their peers. Issues about one’s body image are frequent among both men and women throughout the world, but the rise of social media has made these concerns much more prevalent. An individual’s overall opinion of their physical look, as well as the thoughts and feelings that accompany it, whether positive or negative, are referred to as body image in this context. Social media has had a considerable impact on the sensory, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions of body image, in part because it promotes lean body shapes and communicates anti-obesity messages, among other things. The eating habits and body shape of a person who is suffering from an eating disorder will be out of balance. Low self-esteem and dissatisfaction with one’s physical appearance in adolescence are well-documented risk factors for the development of eating disorders. Obsessing over a slender, lean body may result in negative thoughts, which may lead to an adjustment in eating habits, increasing the risk of weight problems and eating disorders. On social media, fat women are both admired and condemned in equal measure when compared to skinny women. Unhappiness with one’s physical appearance has been connected to a number of psychological issues, including depression and anxiety.

Girls’ identities are increasingly developed by how they present themselves to the world and how they are seen by others. As a result of the proliferation of interactive platforms accessible on social media, self-presentation and peer influence are becoming more linked with beauty standards. There are a variety of reasons why people aspire to be like their favorite media figure, including social, psychological, and practical factors. People’s thoughts and attitudes may be positively influenced by social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other similar platforms (Henriques & Patnaik, 2020). People have felt a feeling of belonging on the internet for a variety of reasons. Social media platforms attract the attention of both men and women, who are drawn to photos of esthetic body types that are not related to their own body types. Stories on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook about people who have worked hard to change beauty standards through physical activity and a healthy diet are abundant, and online support groups and communities that help build confidence in one’s body image and acceptance are also abundant on these platforms. Men and women all throughout the globe might benefit from limiting their exposure to body shamers by blocking them. By presenting films on weight problems in everyday life, we want to encourage individuals to never give up and to take responsibility for their own lives. Individuals of different colors, genders, nationalities, and sexual orientations may now connect with one another via social media, making it simpler to break down boundaries and form supporting networks for themselves and others.
