The charge nurse might demonstrate transformational leadership through effective communication. For example, in scene 1, when the support worker approached the nurse with concerns about a patient, the nurse was dismissive and responded in a harsh tone that may have offended the support worker. According to Jankelová and Joniaková (2021), a transformative nurse leader creates an environment that encourages good communication. The nurse should have remained calm instead of dismissing the support worker before he could finish raising his concerns. She could later respond in a manner demonstrating that all the raised concerns would be considered in the final decision affecting the patient.

To demonstrate effective transformation leadership, the charge nurse must enhance her collaboration skills and involve other professionals in critical decisions that affect the patient. For example, in Scene 2, the social worker is only contacted to assess a patient at the last minute. The charge nurse should find a mechanism to ensure that nurses and social workers work closely to meet client’s needs effectively.

The charge nurse should also inspire teamwork in the nursing team because it is lacking. For example, in scene 3, when the charge nurse requests a colleague to help manage extra patients after one nurse is sick and cannot finish the shift, the colleague starts complaining of being overworked. In an effective team, team members support each other in times of need for the whole team’s success.

To implement the competence as a novice nurse leader, I would embrace flexibility when dealing with changing situations. For example, in Scene 1, if the nurse had adopted flexibility, she would have understood that a patient’s health condition could rapidly deteriorate. As a novice nurse, anticipating unexpected situations is critical to being ready to respond effectively. Implementing leadership competence in changing conditions requires a nurse to develop the necessary critical thinking skills. Such skills are useful when balancing competing needs. For example, in scene 1, the charge nurse required critical thinking in solving a problem where a bed was required, but the patient occupying it had challenges that complicated the discharge process. Finally, it is essential to learn collaboration skills to implement the competency. A changing work environment requires a nurse leader to engage other professionals and work with them to develop solutions.

Potential facilitators and barriers that may impact the implementation of the competency

One of the facilitators that can impact the implementation of the competency is the availability of training opportunities. Training opportunities empower nurses to understand the changing healthcare needs. On the other hand, one of the barriers that may impact the implementation of the competency are organizational factors such as budget and resources. Problems like staff shortages require resources to hire additional staff, and limited resources are a significant barrier. Furthermore, resistance to change is another barrier to implementing a competency that focuses on client’s needs in a changing healthcare system (Cheraghi et al., 2023).

An action-based strategy that can be enacted by the novice nurse leader to address barriers

One strategy to deal with the barrier of staff shortage is collaborating with the organizational leadership and effectively communicating the need for prioritizing staff hiring. A nurse leader should be able to advocate and justify the need for more staff. To address resistance to change, a novice nurse leader should embrace open communication and involve team members in decision-making (Cheraghi et al., 2023).
