Dyslexia Narrative Essay

Dyslexia refers to a learning disability in reading. In other words, individuals who have dyslexia have difficulties reading without mistakes and at a good pace. Additionally, people with dyslexia may face a hard time with writing, spelling, and reading comprehension. On the other hand, it is essential to note that the challenges mentioned above are not connected to a person’s intelligence. A snapshot of dyslexia reveals that it is a common condition that makes the victim find it hard to read. In the narrative at hand, I will explain what I have learnt concerning dyslexia.

Research by Protopapas & Parrila (2018) asserts that between five and ten percent of people worldwide suffer from the condition. Others say that more than seventeen percent of people show signs of reading issues. Children suffering from the condition do not outgrow it. On the other hand, teaching tactics and methods can help persons living with dyslexia manage their challenges and improve their reading skills. It is worthy to note that persons of any age can be examined for the condition. However, the tests are different for adults compared to that of kids.

According to research by Hebert et al. (2018) has shown that dyslexia can also create complexity with other skills. These include math, writing, spelling, and reading comprehension. People sometimes have faith that dyslexia is linked to vision problems. They think of it as writing backward or reversing letters. On the other hand, dyslexia is a problem with language. Typically, people who have dyslexia have problems with reading fluently. The condition is characterized by often making mistakes and reading slowly, which can significantly affect how they comprehend what they have read in due course. However, they can be helped by having other people read to them since they have no issue understanding the text is concerned.

I have learnt that Dyslexia impacts individuals differently. As a result, symptoms might vary from one person to the other. A significant sign of the condition is decoding words, which is the ability to match sounds to letters. On top of that, children can have trouble with a more fundamental skill known as phonemic awareness, which is recognizing the sounds in words. Issues with phonemic awareness can be noted in preschool children. Researchers have not yet highlighted the possible causes of dyslexia (Kuhl et al., 2020). However, they assert that brain and gene differences play a significant part. Some of the possible causes of the condition include genes and heredity and brain activity, and anatomy. The total assessment is the only method that can be used to know if someone has dyslexia. It can be done either privately or at school. Carrying out a diagnosis can result in supports and services at learning institutions and work.

In summing up, I have learnt that dyslexia can be referred to as the learning disability in reading. However, individuals who have dyslexia have difficulties reading without mistakes and at a good pace. Additionally, people with dyslexia may face a hard time with writing, spelling, and reading comprehension. On the other hand, it is essential to note that the challenges mentioned above are not connected to a person’s intelligence.
