Introduction
Supervisory skills play an influential role in managing any form of team effectively in the workplace. The paper will reflect on the supervisory skills that Mr. Chan displayed in a given construction project scenario and give recommendations for the problems identified. It will start with a general discussion on the roles and skills of supervision before later analyzing the issues being faced by the site team as per the case study. Finally, it will discuss the reasons behind these problems before providing the suggested solutions based on the literature review. Lastly, the paper will conclude by summarizing the significant points put across.
General Discussion of Supervisory Roles and Skills
Supervisors play a vital role in the team, which involves overseeing work performance, delegating assignments to be done, providing guidance to the members of the team and ensuring maximum output and efficiency as well. Primary supervisory skills entail but are not limited to communication skills, decision-making abilities, problem-solving skills, and management skills, among others (Mathieu et al., 2016). A sound supervisor ensures a work-supportive climate, builds up motivation for the work team, and works towards promoting interdependence to achieve the organizational goal.
The Recognition of Site Team Problems
From this case study, several issues are identified as being present within the site team. These problems mainly relate to erratic meetings, lack of focus or productivity within meetings, severe project delays going unchecked, and channels of communication that are perceived as needing to be more effective (Whitley, 2019). This factor adversely affects teamwork, impacts progress, and lowers morale and job satisfaction.
Evaluation of the Causes of the Problems
This tendency creates problems with respect to Mr. Chan’s style of supervision in case of last-minute scheduling, vagueness regarding the issues to be discussed, and taking up only those relevant points which are pressing; for example, a problem with proper channels of communication compounded by team member prioritization shows tendencies of arising (Whitley, 2019). Mr. Chan’s dismissiveness of Zoe’s complaints reveals an unempathetic and narrow mind that inflames the anger of the team members.
Suggestions for Solutions
They include improvement of his supervisory skills through training, especially on time management, communication, and conflict resolution. Structured meeting schedules with clear agendas and predefined objectives will, therefore, improve productivity and engagement. Open dialogue, input, and suggestions from team members can further facilitate a collaborative atmosphere and problem-solving skills (Borders & Brown, 2022). He also needs to strategize how to solve top issues that cause him concern, such as delays in projects, and should be forward in discussing ways the issue should be minimized if projects are to be delivered effectively.
Conclusion
Practical supervisory skills are critical in fostering a positive and harmonious working environment. This fact is brought out by the above case study, which shows that supervisory skills are necessary to ensure the alleviation of some site problems. If able to identify the problems, assess what causes them, and derive measures that meet the conditions, then this would go towards optimizing their team performance with a view toward achieving project success. The onus now rests on an organization to invest further in the development of good supervisors for solid teams and overall organizational growth.
